From the Pampas to the Steppes

During the 800 kilometers that we have covered today, the landscape around us was changing continually. From the Pampas we crossed to the Steppes of Patagonia, while we saw the first guanaco, which are the most characteristic animals of the area,

The guanacos belong to the same family with the lamas, (a kind of camel) and they live at the dry and semi-dry areas of South America. They survive in those dry, difficult climates, because of their remarkable capability to save and store water within their body, while they take the necessary hydration by the plants they eat.

The characteristic wind of Argentina, the cold Pampero, which blows to the Pampas, was present all the way during our journey. It reached to its full strength when we approached Andes and started to cross through them, so as to be able to reach San Carlos. The photos and the videos speak for themselves.

We had crossed Andes another two times in 2010, during our previous journey. We had crossed the Paso de Jama, and the Paso de Upsallata next to the highest top of Andes, the Aconcagua. I am under the impression that today’s passage was nicer that the two previous ones, although not at such a high altitude.

Hip, hip hurray! We found pesos!!!

While travelling, we realized that we were going to have problems with the exchange. At the town of Neuquen we attempted to take some money from the cash machine, but we found out, to our great disappointment, that they do not have any money at all and there are queues everywhere. We reached our destination, we found a hotel at the shores of the lake, the  Hotel Nahuel Huapi and then we went out for a walk down town so as to find some pesos.

Clever multiplications

The second bank, after several… alchemies with the sums, it gave us 700 pesos eventually. So we acted right away and we used both our cards quite a few times. 7x700 = 4.900 pesos. Not too bad, after all!!

Relaxation and pleasure

The San Carlos de Bariloche, is a really beautiful city. We appreciated and enjoyed its beauties, only when we had eventually solved the problem of finding money. The town is located at the feet of Andes, at the south shores of Nahuel Huapi Lake and inside the homonymous National Park. With its characteristic alpic architectural style, the city is an important tourist centre with installations for skiing, hiking and mountain climbing. Moreover, it has many restaurants, coffee shops and chocolate shops.

Don’t you glare at me…

We took money again, 6x700 this time, since they were giving us funny glares all those waiting in the queue behind us. Next, we went to the tourist office and took information concerning our journey. They did not have answers to all our questions, so they told us to visit the tourist agency at Esquel, 300 km northern of San Carlos. That was the place where we would find if there was any particular problem with our journey to the side of Chili and if we would be able to find a petrol station. After taking some last photos at the shores of the lake, we started our trip.
