Punta Arenas

If you treat me an…adaptor, I will treat you a…coffee…

We continued towards Punta Arenas driving in parallel with the Strait of Magellan during the last klm of our journey.

In between 1890 and 1940, the area known as the Strait of Magellan became one of the most productive areas as far as sheep breeding and wool production. The port of Punta Arenas_ which in the past was used as a place of exile for convicts and military officers with inappropriate behavior_ was considered as one of the most important ports of Chile, although exposed to storms, because it was used as a supply, refueling station for the steam boats which used to travel in between Atlantic and Pacific Ocean. That time was before the construction of the Canal of Panama. Today its use is limited (cruise boats and boats with specific scientific missions). The town is often the starting point for missions to Antarctica, although Usuaya in Argentina and Christchurch in New Zealand play the same role too for such kind of missions.

We arrived at our hotel,Hotel Tierra del Fuego, early in the afternoon and we went for a walk in the town of Punta Arenas.

It is a beautiful town, with squares, nice buildings and commercial centers. We managed to find in a rather…adventurous way an adaptor. It was practically a gift by a young lady, but we insisted to offer her a coffee as an appreciation to her kindness. Next, and after we had visited the dock, we returned to our hotel. It was cold again and it was feeling like winter one more time. The temperature was in between 6 to 12 degrees of C.
