El Chalten

13nth of February 2015
Not even in my wildest dreams…

From Rio Gallegos we moved north towards El Chalten, passing through Esperanza. This is where we will sleep tonight. As we are approaching, the landscape surrounding us becomes more and more beautiful. At some point we see in front of our dreamy eyes the famous figures of the granite mountain tops of Fitz Roy at  Los Glaciares National Park.

I had seen them countless times in photos, in travel guides and in my computer. I had dreamed to see them in real, too, countless times. But neither the dreams nor the photos can ever prepare you for what you are about to feel, when you see these skyrocketing mountains approaching more and more by every curve of the road upwards.

We firstly saw el Chalten from far away. It was sunk into a deep valley which is created by the homonymous river that crosses through the magnificent Andes.

Coffee…or trekking? It is a matter of taste!

We reached our destination, found the  Hotel Poincenot, confirmed the meeting time for our next day’s excursion to the Viedma Glacier and went to our room, a beautiful attic. Then we took a walk to the town, along with hundreds of guests (hikers, trekkers and alpinists of young age), who were all sun burnt and dirty, after their whole day trip to the the most famous trekking paths, paths that only Patagonia can offer. We, more relaxed of course, enjoyed the afternoon sun and then the sunset behind Fitz Roy, having our coffee at a café in the centre of the village. Afterwards, we enjoyed parillia and other delicacies from the buffet, before our wonderfully relaxing sleep.

14nth of February 2015
The most appropriate date indeed! I fell in love…

With the catamaran of Patagonia Aventura, we had a mini cruise to the lake Viedma so as to see the homonymous glacier. The  Viedma Glacier is the largest glacier of Argentina and the second largest of South America. Its length is 70km, its width is approximately 30km, its height is 50m and it has a significant sinking into the water. Its surface may varies in color from white to deep blue. The blue color characterizes the very solid parts of the ice, which have no oxygen. The picture of the glacier may change from day to day, but it always remains magical and one can fall in love with it, no matter the kind of the shades…

The “beast” Viedma Glacier

We started with bright sunshine and continued with cloudiness and drizzle, in turns. When we reached the dock to embark in the catamaran,

the surface of the lake felt like mirror. It was perfect in its absolute tranquility. (mobile 345.jpg) As we were approaching the glacier, the weather started changing rapidly. At the last turn, when we eventually had visional contact with the “beast”, it felt as we were right into the eye of the cyclone: strong, frozen wind, drizzle and then sleet, a whole specific microclimate itself, which characterizes one of the largest glaciers of the planet.

It would be impossible to ignore it, even if you had wanted to. It was there, not allowing you to do so, looming, dominating the landscape. It was surrounding you with frozen wind and icy rain, was preparing you for its fascinating magnificence and was warning you that nothing here was simple. Nothing here was ordinary…
