El Calafate

14nth of February 2015
The Good Samaritans…

After the end of the excursion, we started towards El Calafate where we spent the night at. At a certain point of our journey we found an Israeli guy who was here for three months already and was not sure whether he wanted to return back to his country or to remain in Argentina. He was sort of petrol, so we took him along with us to El Calafate.

We arrived and, while trying to find our hotel, we realized that there was a big celebration taking place in the town, with lots of people gathering around. That had to be something important, most likely, since all the roads were closed, with continuous detours and for pedestrians only, due to the special occasion.
What’s the celebration for???

“The Lake’s Birthday”!!!

We manage to arrive at the  Boutique Hotel La Cantera, our hotel, and after our check in, we take all the information needed for our tomorrow’s excursion to the glaciers. Then, we return to the centre of the town again, where we find out that it is “the birthday” of the lake Argentino. It is in fact its 136th anniversary, since it was given its name. The situation down town is chaotic.

We walk around and eat ice cream, which is very popular amongst the locals. There was a quiet perplex process of serving it, which we absolutely adored…

We buy chocolates from a shop and what we see next is lamps roasting.

It is our familiar pariyada. We visit one of the restaurants that look more interesting to us, as far as their menu. There is a waiting list, so we give our names, go for another walk and eventually we return to eat.

We tried a steak and a lamp risotto.

15nth of February
Everything is superb today…

Superb breakfast at a superb hotel!!
We started one more cruise at the Glaciares National Park, so as to see the rest of the important glaciers in this area (the Perito Moreno and the Uppsala Glacier).
Our cruise, with the Catamaran  Glaciers Boat Tour: Ice Rivers Express  (organized by the company Argentina4u again) completes itself at three o’ clock in the afternoon and includes the Uppsala Glacier and a few smaller ones, but not the Perito Moreno.

Our first acquaintance with the icebergs

We are brought to the dock, from which our cruise will start, by bus.
Before embarking, we pay the entrance money for the National Park and off we go.
We sail at the lake Argentino and approach the Uppsala Glacier at first. This particular glacier is part of the great glaciers of South Patagonia, which consist the third biggest deposit of fresh water in the world. The Uppsala Glacier is magnificent. It is a whole world made of ice and it attracts the eye like a magnet, as it stands there sunbathed…

I can’t believe that under such perfect conditions of sunshine and temperature I am able to see big icebergs floating around us.

We are so lucky, that we are even able to witness the ablation of a huge piece of an iceberg.
Fascinated, we all gather at the deck trying to catch the best shot and to avoid, at the same time, the strong wind and the splitting of the waters, while the catamaran is maneuvering around the iceberg.

The Seco and the Spegazzini Glacier seem less impressive, as we return to the port.

Paying our respects to the greatest glacier...

It is not possible for us to leave without seeing the most famous glacier of all, the  Perito Moreno Glacier, no matter how much the time is pressing us.
We arrange with our travel guide, during our cruise, to have a taxi waiting for us at the port, when our trip will be over. It can perfectly take us to the Perito Moreno, since it is the only glacier approachable from the land.
Perito Moreno is a huge creation of ice and its length reaches the 30klm.
Quite often, while it’s moving, it enters the big lake Argentino, cutting it out, practically, from the river that provides it with water. The waters of the river are concentrated behind this natural barrier, reaching often the height of 30meters and even further.
In some rare occasions the pressure of the waters is strong enough to create rifts to the glacier and so they manage eventually to continue their course.

Taxi driver…rally driver…

The port is empty of cars and people, after the end of our cruise, and we wait for the taxi.
We see a white car coming with vertiginous speed, we node at the driver and he stops.
We get inside the taxi and he starts the engine again. We are one kilometer away from the parking, when we find ourselves into a perfect jamming. We are getting nervous, since it is already 4 o’clock and we still have to cross the Clillian borders today, which close at 8 o’clock.
We manage to arrive to our destination in about half an hour. This is where our taxi driver leaves us to continue on foot. We make arrangements to meet him forty minutes later and we eventually, after a good running, reach at the wooden platform which leads to the glacier…

it sings with its unique voice beautiful and alluring…

The song of the glacier… Continuous cracklings can be heard from its internal part and sometimes a strong rattling noise warns us that some piece of ice brakes and then ablation follows.

Extraordinary experience!!! And how wise our decision was to visit them in such a proper order!! We take photos, plenty of them, and return to the meeting point with our taxi.
We eventually reach our car and start our journey towards the borders station La Turbio-Argentina. It was the only one opened 24 hours a day, while the rest of the borders stations were closing at 8 o’clock in the evening.
