Leon: The magic colonial city!!!

After having breakfast in a beautiful garden, with the company of hens and roosters, we went for a promenade in Leon, which is the cultural center of the country and traditionally the most progressive place too.

We enjoyed walking on the cobbled roads and we had a wonderful tour around the beautiful colonial city with the colorful low buildings, the green patios, the great state buildings, the countless churches and monasteries.
In any case, in this part of the world, Catholic Church was for many centuries the greatest colonial power.

We visited the Cathedral of Asuncion, its construction started in 1747 and was completed a century after, which is the largest Cathedral of Central America.

The many murals that can be seen there are witnessing its great history.

But then again, even the smallest neighbourhood is of historical interest.
Like Lonely Planet puts it: “Many people fall in love with Granada, but most of them leave their heart in Leon”.

I couldn’t agree more with that. "The drop dead gorgeous city (in a crumpling colonial way) is bubbling over with art galleries, awesome old churches, political graffiti and fabulous cafes”

Managua!!!

Filled up with amazing pictures, we left Leon and started our trip to Matagalpa, so as to see a different area, more mountainous, at a higher altitude and certainly fresher, before returning to Managua by driving on motorway 1, doing the round of the homonymous lake.

On the way, we bought melons, which looked really nice. We combined them with pita bread with rice and local white cheese.

We spent our last afternoon in Nicaragua, walking around the streets of the capital city Managua. Once, it used to be colorful and full of energy, but after the earthquake that occurred in 1972 it unfortunately lost its identity.

We slept at the hotel Best Western las Mercedes.
