The incomprehension continues…

The next day I realised that they had arranged for us to take breakfast in the hotel Gran Francia and not in the hotel Alhambra, where we had slept.
Naturally, we refused to move around aimlessly in the heat and so we took our breakfast in the hotel that we had slept the previous night. I paid, but I kept the receipt so as to take my money back from booking.com.

Leaving aside our irritation for the continuous inconvenience, we enjoyed a super breakfast, the first one of a series to come, while we were staying in Nicaragua and then in Costa Rica. It was an absolute pleasure that breakfast in Alhambra, under the hotel’s covered veranda, with views to the Cathedral and to the horse carriages.

A “Magnificent Sultan” in South America

After our breakfast, we took a horse carriage and went around the town for about an hour. We crossed narrow roads, where we saw brightly painted houses and mansions too, along with buildings built in Renaissance and Baroque Rhythm. Most of the houses we saw, though, were quite low, with tiled roofs and wooden doors that led into large internal yards.

The colonial town of Granada, is and excellent sample of the colonial architecture that was popular in 1524.
It is the oldest Spanish town in Nicaragua and also the oldest town of the Western Hemisphere.
Very idyllic, with its unique buildings and its old churches, it is not accidental that was declared Monument of Universal Heritage, protected by Unesco.
We admired the architecture of the town’s buildings.

We saw the monastery and the church of San Francisco, (Convento y Museo San Francisco) which was constructed in 1529 and it is the first church that was built in Nicaragua.

We also saw the church Iglesia de la Merced, which was built in 1783, was destroyed completely in 1854 and was rebuilt, after the numerous destructions that had suffered, in 1862. With its impressive baroque frontage, it has won rightfully the title of the most beautiful church in Granada.

We were also impressed by the Church of Guadalupe, with its colonial architecture. It looks like scenery of a medieval movie as it towers magnificently in front of a small fountain, with its gray frontage ruined by the time that has gone by.

We passed by the shores of Nicaragua Lake. We ended up at Calle La Calzada and then we passed by Parque Colon (central park) with its exotic, fruit bearing trees, where we also saw many benches for young couples and families.
At the square (western side of Parque Colon), many horse carriages, with the horses decorated with big pink and purple bows, were waiting for other romantic ones who would love to go around the idyllic town.

Unbearable heat!!!

After having enjoyed our time in Granada, we started our journey to Leon.
On the way, while driving in parallel with the shores of the Lake Managua, we could see the Momotombo Volcano, which dominates the north shore.

We made a small detour, so as to see Leon Vieja, Monument of Universal Heritage, protected by UNESCO, and then we arrived at the city of Leon.

The heat was unbearable. Under 40 degrees of the Celsius Climax we felt almost breathless.

Our hotel, Hotel Flor de Sarta, was an oasis of greenery in the hot cement of the city.

We rested a bit and then, just before the sunset, we had a lovely promenade on foot at the central square, where we enjoyed beer and frozen sangria.

We also saw the first procession of our journey.
While returning to our hotel, we had a stop at a pizzeria for pizza and pasta.
