Plan B

Early morning flight, with Copa Airlines, from Managua to San Jose, Costa Rica.
Luggage, exchange currency in colon, reference from the information desk at the airport and… change of plans, as far as our first day’s schedule.

We were planning to visit the Caribbean Coast and to take a taste of the area. But we were told that it would be impossible to make it during our scheduled time.

So we took our car, a 4x4 KIA Tuscon from the Company Easy Car at the Adobe offices and tried our alternative plan.
We would take a taste of the
Manuel Antonio National Park, which is one of the most idyllic and beautiful in the whole country,on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica.
A few hours later even our alternative plan sank. So we drove towards Puntarenas, but we never managed to get there either…

It was Holy Thursday, bank holiday, and all the inhabitants of Costa Rica were in their cars. Endless, desperate traffic jam.

The Pacific Coast packed too.

Models… wild crocodiles!!!

Forced detour.
Under the bridge of River Tarcoles there is a biotope which hosts the largest population of wild crocodiles in the whole America.
We found them sunbathing. They were slothful and bored by the heat and very hesitantly posed for our cameras.

On the way back to Cartago, we kept seeing directing road signs to the town of Grecia (Greece).

We were happily surprised. And we became enthusiastic, when we were informed that the town took its name due to admiration for the Ancient Greek Civilisation!
The town Grecia, in the heart of Costa Rica, claims proudly that is characterized by high artistic sense and its inhabitants consider themselves more cultivated than their other compatriots.

Regardless of the continuous traffic jam we eventually managed to reach Cartago and arrived at our hotel, Hotel y Restaurante El Guarco, early in the afternoon.

Holy Thursday in Cartago...

We visited the center of the old capital city, which is among the oldest, historically speaking. Although the earthquakes and the explosions of the volcanoes have destroyed many of the old colonial buildings, the impressive churches give the picture of a city which continues to be the cultural and religious centre of the country.

We found lots of people gathered at the Basilica of Cartago. We asked and learned that the Evening Procession (colorful, religious litany of the Holy Week),

which for Cartago is famous, would start at 8 o’clock in the evening and it would include two litanies with epitaphs.

So, at 8 o’clock in the evening we were in the centre again, dressed in warm clothes, since the temperature had fallen to 15 degrees of the Celsius Climax.

We attended along with the inhabitants of the city and many other visitors the reenacting of the Dolorous Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

A unique experience, indeed…
