28th of April
We did it!!!

This time the procedure was easier and faster.
I had already learned the chassis number and was familiar with the VIN, so I filled in a record time the application forms.
The only prerequisite for entering Mozambique was the Third Party Insurance and therefore we had soon passed through passport control and were ready to start our journey.

We were, at last, in Mozambique! It was a fact and we had made it!

And I must say that the road, in the beginning, was a very nice one!
Very busy, with heavy traffic and also workers who were repairing damaged parts of the road surface.

I was wondering which country exactly were referring to, all those things I had read so far…???

Oh, yes! I should mention the heat too!

Real African heat! At last!

Of course the dream of the beautiful road didn’t last for long and it didn’t take long for us to realize what exactly they meant all those people who were referring to the notorious roads of Mozambique.

Only a few dozens of km after the border, we were finding potholes and damaged road surface everywhere.

Dirt, dust, slow speed and once more our schedule was literally in the air.
The 6 initial traveling hours became 8 and then 9 and of course night caught us again while driving…

Awkward encounter…

But there was something that compensated for all those burdens, though…

We found Save River on its way to the Indian Ocean and witnessed an amazing African sunset, where the whole sky was painted in a dazzling pink color.

We also had a rather uncomfortable encounter, when an armed soldier waved and obliged us to stop.
Next, he asked some money from us, so as to buy food.
We said no politely and told him we didn’t carry any cash with us.

On the way to our destination, we failed to exchange currency at a bank we found in a village on the road.
I suppose they didn’t understand what exactly we were looking for.

Finally, we found a petrol station to fill the tank by using a credit card and when they told us that they accept dollars too, we managed to pay cash and buy some necessary supplies, although we got back change notes in the local currency. They were our first meticals.

We arrived in Vilankulo after 8 o’clock and went straight to the  Hotel Pescador, where we ate a delicious seafood dinner, before going to bed.
