Where there is a will, there is a way

In general (Smile & Say Hello, Keep in touch, Don’t be afraid, Eat local food, Take many photos)

Money

Make sure that you have US dollars with you in case you are met with problems by using any other currency.

Moreover, always have in your wallet one-dollar or two–dollar notes, because if they give you change in local currency, or old and damaged dollar notes you will have to find a way to spend it, before leaving the country…

Credit cards are basically not accepted when it comes to eating in local restaurants, buying things and petrol. They are accepted only in some hotels and touristic resorts.

Transports

Driving a rental car in Mozambique is not a simple task, so take the matter seriously…

You will find all the necessary information regarding requirements  here

Low speed limits and delays due to frequent roadblocks is a problem too.

Υπολογίστε τον χρόνο του ταξιδιού σας… αφήστε 1-2 ώρες περιθώριο

Add at least a couple of hours to the estimated travel time.

Daylight hours are short to all destinations around equator and this turns out to be a big problem.

On the other hand this gives you more time to rest, but when your program is too tight, like ours was, you may end up driving during night. This is something that I always try to avoid, since it is dangerous and we don’t have the chance to see much of the route.

The visit to Ibo Island is time consuming by all means…

Due to the tide, if you are going by boat you will have to travel during stream hour. This practically means departure on difficult hours and long waiting, during embarkation.

Also difficult is the route from Pemba to Quisanga, the port from where all the boats depart, especially immediately after the rain period, when the roads are practically not passable.
It will take you at least 3 to 4 days to go there and return back.

We didn’t have the luxury to do the traditional and probably more adventurous route by the line boat, so we asked the Kaskazini Tours, travel agency for a daily tour on the date of our preference.

We flew to Ibo Island with a small chartered aircraft.

They were waiting for us, the people from Ibo Island Lodge and offered us a guided tour of the area.
Our package was including food and usage of the Lodge’s facilities too.

I know that the description sounds very VIP, but it was exactly that, if I may say so.
It would be practically impossible to do such a thing in any other country but we could afford it in Mozambique.

I must add at this point that the wonderful communication and the great services offered by the tourist agency were beyond our expectations. They practically gave us new ideas and also solutions to all the problems we were facing in Mozambique. Thanks a lot, Jax!!!

We would also like to thank the DriveMoz, team, which answered to all the questions we had while we were organizing our journey.

Sights

In Mozambique visit Maputo, the Island of Mozambique and Pemba and enjoy swimming and snorkeling. Take with you many swimming suits, sunscreen, hats and sunglasses!

It is very easy for the visitor to walk in the Island of Mozambique and cover all the distance within a few minutes. Moreover, one can see Christian churches, mosques and also a Hindu temple!

A ride with a traditional Dhow is a must. Don’t miss it!

Food

Buy cashews from everywhere, when in Mozambique! Try them definitely! They are absolutely delicious!

Μentality

In general, the people are very friendly and kind, when the attitude of the visitors is polite, kind and composed. The locals appreciate a lot the understanding and the admiration of the African culture by travelers and can be very welcoming.

General

With proper information and understanding of the problems that probably still exist in certain areas and also with a friendly, joyful and discreet attitude, a visit to Mozambique will be safe and amazing too.

After all, we are talking about a once in a lifetime experience. A journey to Mozambique will always have something mythical and dreamy about it and deserves to be treasured and remembered forever by real travelers…
