Island of Mozambique

4rth of May
Four roadblocks, three stops for photos…

We woke up very early in the morning, so as to reach the Island of Mozambique as early as possible.

We had to cover a distance of about 400 km and that would take us at least 6 hours, due to the low speed limits and the delays caused by regular roadblocks by the police.

So, after 4 roadblocks and 3 stops for photos, at 11 o’clock we managed to reach our hotel, the Jardim dos Aloés.
We were welcomed by Bruno, who gave us useful information and a map. Afterwards we went for a walk so as to see the sightseeing of the island.

One can walk on foot from one side to the other in this island, where many religions seem to have left their mark through the centuries. We saw Christian churches, mosques and a Hindu temple too!

There was something in the air….

We walked till Fortaleza São Sebastião and entered it..

We enjoyed views of the Indian Ocean from the ancient gun embrasures and visited the Governor’s Palace, which, in our days, is a museum.

Then we returned to our hotel for some rest, during the very hot hours, and at 4 o’clock in the late afternoon we went for a new walk. We passed by the office of  Island Blue Island Safaris, in order to organize a Dhow cruise, for the next morning.

But we weren’t lucky… An accident with the boat, which was doing the excursion to the island Goa the previous day, had disorganized everybody…

So our only option was to continue our promenades and treasure memories from Stone Town and its residents, before ending up to the Richshaws Pousada E Café, where we enjoyed a beautiful sunset and frozen beers.

Of course, we didn’t stop to the beers…The walking and the fresh ocean breeze had made us really hungry…

When eventually we decided to return it was 6 o’clock in the evening and night had already fallen.

There was something alluring in the atmosphere though…Something that had to do with the rich and fascinating history of the island…We had a last walk on its roads and then we returned back to our hotel.
