30th of April
Hitting the road before dawn!!!

At 5 o’clock in the morning, before dawn, we loaded the luggage into the car and started our journey.

We could see palm trees everywhere and a few early risers, who were walking at the side of the road.

Our first attempts for finding petrol to fill the tank were unsuccessful.
We found either closed petrol stations or opened ones, which, though, were accepting only meticals.
Since we had not exchanged any money (we had only south African rand, American dollars and our credit cards) we kept on searching, till we found, at last, a petrol station that accepted mastercard.

On the roads and in the villages, during our journey, we could see almost everywhere “loaded” people walking.

The women, impressive, beautiful and willowy figures dressed in colourful sarongs, were carrying, most of them, their babies on their backs, skilfully secured, in order to walk and carry goods more easily.

We watched them carrying on their heads buckets with water, loads of wood and basins full of fruits.
The loads felt like extensions of the colorful handkerchiefs, which they were wearing and most probably are used as basement of balance too.

Birthday in Maputo!!!

On the road, everywhere there were trees with cashews nuts in packaged parcels with varying prices (100, 200, 400 and 1200 meticals). In a way they reminded us of festive ornaments.

We bought a 200 metical parcel. They were the most delicious cashews that I have ever tried.

We stopped at the next tree and bought a 1200 metical parcel for the price of 200 south African rad.

The road was not all that bad either, fortunately. We covered a distance of 700 km within 10 hours.

We arrived in Maputo and went to our hotel, the  Villa das Mangas Garden Hotel.

Afterwards we went for a walk in the city.
It was really hot and all the locals were sitting on their verandas for some freshness.
We celebrated my birthday with an amazing chocolate cake and coffee.

Birthday in Maputo…in Mozambique!!

I had all I wanted.
I didn’t even need a birthday present…although, between you and me, I must say that I had already received one, earlier on, back in Greece…
