Difficult route…

We hit the road before sunrise. We took the national road N4, passed by Tana, luckily without so much as a delay, and carried on our journey towards Moramanga.
Too many trucks on the road…Far too many…The road twisted and turned, rose and fell, while the badly maintained trucks were breaking down often, creating an incredible traffic jam.
We had a first taste of Inland Madagascar.

Rice fields, with people working there and many scattered small villages everywhere. The banks of the rivers were filled with locals who were washing the Sunday laundry.

We stopped in Moramanga for chocolate éclairs and coffee at  Coq d'Or. The yummy tastes helped us forget the morning hassle. We exchanged some more money with the help of the French lady who was the owner of the café.

When time came to leave, we realized that we had lost the one of the two keys which were securing the trunk of our vehicle. Since we didn’t have the luxury to worry about that too, at that moment, we continued towards Manambato, at the banks of the Rasoabe Lake (Lac Rasoabe).

We kept driving on  RN2, where we saw the first traveler plants. Although RN2 is the most important road of the country and also a smooth asphalt road too, the last 7 km to Manambato is a rough dirt truck suitable only for 4x4 vehicles.
It was, in fact, our first tough route, not on asphalted road. The car was bouncing but it was still moving.

A forest full of…lemurs!!!

We arrived in late afternoon at Manambato, a small fishing village on the white sandy shores of Lake Rasoabe and the gateway to the Pangalanes Canal. We found Orania lodge.

We asked if there was any room available for us and if there was any possibility for a boat trip in the Canal and more specifically to  Palmarium Hotel in that afternoon.. After having secured our room, we were told that it was possible to have our boat excursion too..

We had two options:
We would either take the regular ferry which would be overloaded with a group of French people already waiting at the deck before our arrival, or we would take the speed boat. We chose the second one and we were in Palmarium lodge within 45 minutes.

So, the receptionist of the Orania lodge was right when he reassured us that we would be there in a minute, literally.

With our guide Lemaro Pascal Palmarium we went for a walk in the forest.
There were lemurs everywhere!
They were jumping all over the place, fighting for the bananas we had taken with us… Black and white ruffed Lemur,Common Brown Lemur, Coquerel’s Sifaka, Crowned (Coronatus) Sifaka, Varecia Variegata Lemur, Eastern Lesser Bamboo Lemur…

We saw them all!
How does it feel to be touched by a lemur’s long characteristic fingers? In fact, not only to be touched, but to be grubbed, literally,  by this eerie little animal, while it tries to keep its balance and steal the bananas you are holding?

It is one of those exciting and sensational things that can not be described by words!!!
Our return to the hotel in the evening, while the boat was sliding gently on the calm waters of Pangalanes Canal, under full moon, was romantic and beautiful.

We could see trembling lights coming from the villages on the banks of Lac Rasoabe and also local fishermen with their pirogues, who were asking us loudly if we had enjoyed our evening!
Back to our hotel, we had dinner and then went to sleep. Unfortunately, the electricity in our bungalow was cut out…
