Gigantic Prehistoric Mural...

We started early from Varadero, we passed by Matanzas, we made a detour near Havana and headed towards Vinales Valleyand the homonymous valley, the most important tobacco growing area in Cuba.

The valley with the karst formations and the luscious vegetation, which is Monument of Universal Heritage of Unesco reminded us of China’s Guilin. We also saw the gigantic, prehistoric mural outside Vinales, where time seems to have stopped in past decades.

On the contrary, at Pinar del Rio, the place that we arrived at next, things were a bit… messy.
We were going to visit a tobacco company, so as to see the traditional way of producing and making cigars, which is the most famous exporting product of the area, but unfortunately, since it was Friday afternoon, the factory was closed.

We returned to Havana, we crossed Vedado, the modern urban neighborhood, we passed by Plaza de la Revolucion, the emblematic square of the Cuban Revolution, with Che Guevara’s mural dominating the old building of Ministerio del Interior.

We also crossed the Ramba Avenue, we saw the historic hotel Habana Libre and walked on Malecon, the broad road which stretches for 8klm along the coast in Havana. This time, we found very easily our hotel, Hotel Lido
We left our car there and then started a tour on foot so as to see the old city of Havana.

Since he had no intention of eating his own dishes, why on earth should we try them ourselves?

Passing through Calle Empedrado, which was under construction, we arrived at the Cathedral’s Square and then at the Placa de Armas (Weapon Square).
We also walked on the coastal avenue, where from we admired the El Morro (a pirates fortress) situated at the opposite shore, and we also saw Castillo de San Carlos de la Cabana.

Our promenade led us to the square of St. Francis of Assisi and to the main square of the Old City.
After a first acquaintance with Havana’s Cigars at Hostal Conde de Villanueva, we returned to the square of St. Francis of Assisi for beer and mojitos.
We walked all along Calle Obispo, we passed by Cafe Paris, we reached Floridita, which was terribly busy, and tried to find a place to eat, somewhere near there.
But while searching desperately for a table, we found ourselves quite far away from the centre of that area and we ended up again at Placa de Armas.

At the restaurant that we eventually decided to sit and have our meal, they were trying to promote their dishes of the day, which were cooked with prawns and lobster.

But we were not in the mood for seafood and haven’t even touched prawns at the buffets of the various hotels that we had stayed, in the last 3 days.
So when I ordered beef cooked in Cuban style, the waiter wore a contemptuous expression on his face and said:

«Pfff, beef! If I was you, I would never order that!»

The same contemptuous expression appeared again, when Christos chose roasted pork with onions.

So, since he had no intention of eating his own dishes, why on earth should we try them ourselves?

So we just got up and left, leaving him standing there astonished and with his dish of the day untouched by us!
This, more over, was twice as expensive, if compared to the dishes that we had ordered…
