“Gone with the Wind”

We had a fantastic breakfast in a parlor that reminded us of “Gone with the Wind”.
Ortancia was giving orders and the cook was carrying them out.

After breakfast, we headed towards Guantanamo. I am by now familiar with the application “here” and luckily enough I had downloaded it to my mobile along with the map of Cuba.

We stopped to fill up the tank at a self service petrol station.
The people working there were just strolling around aimlessly. It is quite popular this particular… sport in Cuba, which has stopped in time, somewhere in 50s. When they saw the brand new banknote of the 50 CUC, they seemed genuinely surprised, as if they had never seen a similar one before… After having taken it in their hands, so as to examine it under the sunlight, they brought paper and they wrote down our names. Then they had us signing that we were indeed the holders of this banknote…

We continued our journey to Guantanamo and somewhere during the course we saw an oxcart loaded with a family of three persons.
Feeling really happy, since I was at last going to take a photo of something so idyllic, like an oxcart, I got off the car and run towards them to make sure I will catch them up. The small family’s little boy was trying to hide behind his mother. I asked their permission and took some photos.
Before saying good bye to the couple with the worn by the sun faces and the sweet smiles, feeling absolutely thrilled, I gave them 2 CUC.
Initially it got me by surprise to see gratitude reflected into the depths of their eyes. But soon enough, I realized that I had given them the not at all inconsiderable amount of 40 CUP, if one takes under consideration that a loaf of bread costs less than 0,25. They had received suddenly, out of the blue, a whole month’s salary…

And then… I revolted… for the complete injustice of our world… for the full of hopes dream of the revolution, of every revolution, which sometimes fades and dies, as time goes by, leaving behind many bitter unanswered questions…

The birth land of the heroes!!!

We arrived at Guantanamo. Nice town.

We continued towards Baracoa, which is the oldest town of the island.
On the way to it we found an observation post where from we could see the American Basis, situated at the homonymous bay. We also discovered some souvenirs of modern history in quite nice prices.

We continued on the route parallel with the South Coast, which crosses the southeastern part of Cuba.
The particular area is characterized by very strong rainfalls, something which results to the creation of rain forests, to the outskirts of Baracoa. We crossed an area with banana plantations in between the sierra and the beach.

It is the most beautiful area in Cuba, full of forests and mountains. The birth land of the heroes, accordingly to my travel guide.

Passing through the national park Alejandro de Humboldt, Monument of Universal Heritage of Unesco, we eventually reached Guadarlavaca and Club Amigo Atlantico which would host us. It is situated at one of the most beautiful beaches of the north coast and also of the whole island.

After having enjoyed a really beautiful sunset in the beach, we went to explore the whole inclusive offer, wearing on our wrists the blue bracelet…
