21st September
Brand new car!!!

We woke up before dawn and took the early morning Avianca flight, through Bogota, to Quito.
We arrived at 10’oclok in the morning, approximately.
We headed to the Avis counter, to pick up our car.
When we eventually reached the office of the car hire company, 2km away from the airport, and realized that the car was old and with too many km on it, the first thing I searched for was the USB power plug.
Nowhere… I asked the clerk about it and I got the answer that this specific car model was not equipped with one.
Fair enough, but it was absolutely necessary for me…We needed it for charging our cameras and for listening to music.
After several phone calls and negotiations…a brand new car was finally at our disposal.
The rather rude and nagging clerk who had given us the old car just because we had refused to pay the extra insurance was perfectly cornered and with nothing much to say…

We loaded our luggage, connected cameras and GPS and after having skipped for the time being the capital, Quito, we started our journey to Otavalo.
he route through bare mountains, where the yellow color with its various shades was predominant, reminded us of Bolivia.

Colorful open market

We arrived in Otavalo, found our hotel, Hostal Riviera Sucre, and took a map and instructions for heading to Laguna Cuicocha. We decided, nevertheless, to visit first Plaza de Ponchos, scene of the most colorful daily outdoor market in Ecuador.
We visited the Otavaleño community and their famous market,

hoping to see men and women dressed in their traditional costumes and to enjoy the amazing crafts and other beautiful works of art, while having a glimpse of the folkloric dimension of the country. It was the perfect place for taking many photos and choosing lovely souvenirs for relatives and friends.

After having taken many photos, we started our trip to  Laguna Cuicocha.

Mash volcano eruption… gives birth to Lake!!!

Laguna Cuicocha is a wide caldera and crater lake, created by a massive eruption about 3100 years ago. Its name comes from the Kichwa indigenous language and means "Lago del Cuy" or Guinea Pig Laguna in English. It was given this name due to the guinea pig shape of the largest Island in the middle of the Laguna.

We found a bench on the road, where a woman was cooking fried chicken.

We sat there and ate a delicious and spicy meal, although in the company of far too many flies…
And it was at that point, when I inevitably did the following thinking…
After the journey to Tahiti for our thirtieth wedding anniversary, in the previous year, in 2015, there came the journey to Colombia for our 31 years of marriage!

But, I didn’t get any real personal present for me...
think it is getting worse as the years go by!!!

Conclusion: Don’t keep them any further than five years!

We returned to Otavalo, left the car and went for a walk.

People were frying, grilling and cooking food everywhere in the streets. We tried French fries, sweets, searched for memory cards for our cameras and, finally, returned to our hotel.
