Laguna Quilotoa

24th of September
Bright turquoise water, into a 3km caldera!!!

After our gourmet breakfast, we returned to Machachi. A little later we exited the main, central road. Following a route where the dry and with low vegetation Andean landscape was gradually giving its place to the luscious green, the tall trees, the waterfalls and the rivers,

we passed by Sigchos and arrived in Laguna Quilotoa.
It is a 3km wide caldera at an altitude of 3.900 m, formed by the eruption of Quilotoa Volcano in 1280 and is now filled with brilliant turquoise water!
The weather had changed… A very strong wind was blowing and it was too cold!!!

We enjoyed the amazing views to the lake and its surrounding mountain landscapes from the view point and then walked around

and paid a visit to the benches, where locals were roasting and grilling cuy_ meaning guinea pigs, which are considered a great delicacy by the indigenous people.

These animals play a significant role in the daily life of the people of Ecuador, since they are reproduced fast and need very little help and food to survive, while at the same time they offer a very nutritious meal, high in proteins. This is something of great importance, especially for populations that live in high altitudes.

I didn’t succumb to my curiosity to try cuy, since the temptation for French fries was far too big to resist…

Chimborazo Volcano!!!

We continued our journey to Latacunga and then we moved south on Pan-American Highway, under the magnificent shadow of Chimborazo Volcano, which is the highest inactive volcano in Ecuador (6.380m).
It is considered the furthest point from the Earth’s center,
since it is crossed by the equatorial line.

We passed just outside Riobamba, capital of the Chimborazo Province and then continued our journey towards Alausi.

We arrived there just before dark, in thick fog and found our hotel Hostel Gampala.
