Bogota

17nth of September
Dreamy destination!!!

We arrived late in the afternoon in Colombia’s capital, took our rental car and drove to our hotel Hotel de la Opera located in the historic centre of Bogota.

Bogota

18nth of September
An architectural miracle!!!

We woke up in a great mood, regardless of the city’s high altitude (2.540mt). We went to the rooftop terrace of our hotel, so as to enjoy the views of the Bogota skyline.

After our amazing breakfast, we had a walking tour in the historical centre of Bogota, also known as (La Candelaria)

We first visited the famous Bolivar Square (Plaza de Bolivar), next to our hotel.  It is the main square of the Colombian capital which was used during the Spanish colonial period as stage for military acts and bullfights and also as opened public market. It hosts a statue of Simon Bolivar, the great revolutionist, and is surrounded by historical buildings such as the National Capitol, the Palace of Justice and the Primary Cathedral of Bogotá_ reconstructed on the ruins of the first church that was built in Bogota, in 1539_  along with the Tabernacle Chapel (Capilla del Sagrario).

While waiting for the time that the Museum of Gold, would open its doors, we walked the streets of the city, admiring the beautiful colonial buildings with the wrought iron balconies, the ornate wooden doors, the sunbathed patios and the tiny internal gardens.

An architectural miracle, indeed…
At around 11 o’clock, we crossed the centre of the city along with many locals and cyclists, since it was Sunday and everyone was outdoors, we passed by the church Iglesia de San Francisco and finally arrived at the Museum of Gold.

We waited in the queue for a while only to discover eventually that we couldn’t enter before 3 o’clock in the afternoon, because of a small oil leak that had occurred earlier on.

We had no other option than continuing our promenade, always in Candelaria, enjoying the mixture of Spanish Colonial Style, French Classicism and American Eclecticism and Modernism too, which co-exist harmonically and can be seen predominately in the historic buildings surrounding Plaza de Bolivar.

Next, we moved south/southwest towards the Museum Botero which hosts paintings of the great painter Fernando Botero and towards Monserrate Hill which dominates the central square of Bogota.

We walked around the idyllic cobbled streets with the colorful houses and admired the colonial architecture.

We saw the catholic temple Santuario Nacional de Nuestra Señora del Carmen

and the church Iglesia de San Agustín.

Fascinating journey!!!

In the early afternoon we returned to the Museum of Gold, which hosts one of the most beautiful collections of pieces of gold and other materials from the pre-Colombian cultures of Quimbaya ,Tolima and Muisca. It is internationally famous since 1939, when it first opened its doors to public.

Our visit there was a fascinating journey to the treasures of Pre- Colombian Art which are preserved in its thematic rooms! Our whole day was devoted to the capital of a country with splendid past and different physiognomy and also to a people with flamboyant and unique temperament.
