Rotorua

13nth of September 2015
In the land of… “The Lord of  The Rings”!!!

We wake up early in the morning and, crossing through a beautiful, spring landscape, wonderfully green and full of flowers, we arrive at Matamata and  hobbiton. We knew that we would be able to be guided only with an organized tour and, more over, we had no time for this particular tour guidance, since we had already booked another tour for today. But, nevertheless, we wanted to see, at least, the area which is widely known because of the shootings of the famous film “Lord of The Rings”, which took place there.

We continued towards Rotorua, which we had already visited in 2013, and arrived at the  Millenium Hotel Rotorua & Spa, where we had booked an appointment with the people of the Rotorua Canopy Tours.

Christos “Tarzan” and Lena “Jane”!!! Flights from tree…to tree!!!

They came and took us to the company’s offices, where we were informed about the activity we were going to take up: A trip to a virgin forest and seven “flights” to the impressive trees for the next three coming hours.
We were eight couples in total_ with age variations from too young to less young.
We wore the gear, they gave us helmets and we started our journey with the company’s little van. They were all Australians and New Zealanders and amongst them…our royal highnesses, of course…

We made the introductions between us during the course.
Reaching our destination, we started walking to an easily passable terrain, on a marked path, within the forest.

We arrived at the first platform, where they explained to us exactly what we were going to do, what was allowed and what was forbidden. Without realizing it, we had our first “flight”.
I was third at the queue and Christos was behind me.
Practically, we didn’t have the time to think about it and become stressed. We simply had a nice time and we enjoyed it.

With every new “flight” we were feeling more and more comfortable. By the time the sequence was complete, we had become veterans…although we could not control very well the swinging of the rope… We kept landing on our backs, at the reception platform. We took many photos, of ourselves and also of the group and our trainers and then our adventure came to its end.

We return all together to the office of the company and then we get a lift to our hotel. We still have a little time to ourselves, before we go to Mitai Maori Village for a Maori Cultural Performance.

Lit torches…warriors in the river, shouts and drums!!!

We reach our destination at 17:30, we leave the car at the parking and led by the Maori girls, who are dressed with fairs and have their faces painted with the characteristic tattoos, we go to the village where the dinner will be served. At our table, two Malaysians and three Australians are already sat and we can also see tourists from all over the world.

At some point they take us to the external area, so as to show us the characteristic hangi meal which is about to be prepared. Next, we all go down the river. Above us, we can hear loud voices, people’s running steps and the strong sound of drums. In the fading light of the late afternoon, we see figures holding lit torches and running. Till we reached down the river, at the Wai-O-whiro stream, Maori warriors were already there with a canoe (Waka).
They wear traditional costumes and row rhythmically forwards and backwards, while singing. The whole scenery is unbelievably beautiful and fascinating at the same time. When the show was over, the warriors disembarked and went to a nearby area, which was arranged as a village, while all the visitors were led to a little theatre.
On its stage, gathered they were the artists and the properties of the Maoris’ traditional village. What followed next was an interesting show, with scenes of their daily life, accompanied with songs and dances…Mostly noticeable were their tattoos and their characteristic grimaces…

A pleasure for the eye…

Eventually there was time for the traditional dinner.
A rich buffet was set already and it included almost everything: From Maori bread, soups, salads and varieties of meat to…cream pudding…
No need to say that we tried everything again and again, just to make sure that they were all delicious!!!

The tiredness of the day was already heavy on our shoulders, so we left aside the social part of the show, which included multicultural pep talk and walk to the forest with flashlights, and went to sleep. In any case we had seen and done it all…
