25th of September 2015
From summer to…winter!!!

From Santiago, we moved south, taking the auto route 5. It was the first time that we were visiting this particular part of Chile. With relentless drizzling and with a sun that was exchanging places with cloudiness, we passed from areas that were full of fruit bearing trees and then from areas with vineyards and pines, while on our left we could see the peaks of the Andes covered with snow. The landscape was feeling like spring, with all those trees full of blossoming flowers, but the temperature was absolutely winterish.

We were moving to the famous, for its production of wine, area of Chile, to the south of the Capitol City. It is the only developed and densely populated area too, full of cities. What really impressed us, in a bad way, was the very aggressive driving behavior of the Chileans, who were blocking the road for us, making our journey difficult, at any chance given. We covered many km. before reaching Puerto Baras, at the shores of the lake Llanquihue  and at the shadow of two active volcanoes, Osorno and Calbuco.

Our hotel, the Radisson Hotel Puerto Varas was located at the centre of the city, next to the lake and had wonderful views.

The rain had not stopped and the cold was making its presence noticeable. We went around on foot, searching for a restaurant so as to eat something. The only one we found was the Cassis, where we ordered a variety of meat. They brought us a huge portion with many different kinds of meat, (chicken, pork, sausages) French fries, boiled eggs and many kinds of pickles, from onion to carrot. We ate as much as we could and accompanied the meal with beers. Afterwards, we went to our hotel, to our room, so as to rest.
