Ascending. How original…

We crossed Massif Vercor and we arrived at the forgotten village Pont-en-Royans where local fishermen were fishing down the river.
After strolling at the roads of the village, we had a coffee, admiring the beautiful views.
We continued our trip at the same plateau, passing by Col de Rousset (altitude 1254mt), before arriving at the village Die.
Next, we passed from the medieval village Chatillon-en-Diois, and then continued towards La Grave, while crossing another canyon yet, along with cyclists.
We drove an impressive course, by an artificial lake, while skyrocketing, snow covered mountain peaks wouldn’t let us forget that we were in the heart of Alps.



In the kingdom of stone!!!

La Grave was indeed all that is described in the tourist guide books.
It is a stone village, one of the most beautiful in France, where, in contrary with many other mountain villages, the wooden chalets are very rare.
The rareness of the wood, along with several fires from previous centuries, have discouraged people of using wood as construction material, so our visit to La Grave was a visit to a kingdom of stone.
The houses are built of volcanic ash or slate on the rocky slopes of the mountains, in a scalar chain, giving the impression of a huge veranda with views to Meije, while the many narrow, little roads are truly fascinating.



The passages are more than the villages!!!

We continued towards Col du Galibier (altitude 2.645mt). This is a mountain passage at the south area of the French Alps, near Grenoble.
It is the 9th highest mountain passage with asphalt roadway in Alps and the 6th highest among all passages.
It is usually the highest reaching point of the cyclist race Tour de France.
It connects Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne and Briancon through the passages Col du Telegraphe and Col du Lautaret. The passage Col du Galibier is closed during winter.

We were ascending, still watching from high above La Grave, while the sky, heavy from earlier on, opened its gates and the rain started, only to stop, though, a little while after, when we were approaching Col du Lautaret (altitude 2058mt).
We continued going up, towards the Col du Galibier passage, one of the highest in Alps, which we were trying to conquer for the last three years.

We passed by Alpine pastures, surrounded by snow covered mountain peaks. The more we were ascending the more we were feeling the coldness of the weather, but we could see Briancon far away.

So, at some point we reached at an altitude of 2.645mt.



Indescribable, amazing views!!!

We started descending towards Valloire  and then we reached Modane, where from starts the 
Tunnel Frejus, the famous road tunnel which connects France with Italy.
It is one of the most important transport roads in Alps, in between France and Italy and it is used for the 80% of commercial transportations.
More over, it is the ninth largest road tunnel in the world (since 2014). 

We had passed from the tunnel in February of 2006 and therefore, since it was known to us, we continued towards Col del Iseran at an altitude of 2.763mt and at a temperature of 7 degrees of the Celsius climax.
The more we were climbing the heavier the sky was becoming, with many clouds and fog gathering above us.
On our right hand side we had Val d’Isere with its beautiful villages.

We passed for second time from Bourg-St-Maurice (one month ago we had made an attempt to cover the same course, meaning from Beaufort to Grenoble through Col de la Madalene and Col du Glanton, but since the passages were closed we weren’t really able to do it) and continued towards Col Petite Saint Bernard, where we slept at the Belvedere Hotel, which was having incredible, amazing views to the valley of Bourg-St-Maurice.
