Safari Island Lodge...

Temperatures were low when we woke up next morning, but after a nice hot cup of coffee and a good breakfast we were ready to leave. After a 500km drive we arrived in Maun.

It was our second time here.
We had first visited this place in December of 2012.
But we had followed a completely different route then…

As soon as we arrived, we went straight to our hotel, the Safari Island Lodge,

and afterwards we drove to Thamalakane Lodge. It hadn’t changed much since our last visit, 5 years ago.

Mokoro safari... Unique experience!!!

We met our guide and were then ready to start our Mokoro safari, which we had already made arrangements for.
We clambered into the mokoro, (some sort of African pirogue, made by digging out the trunk of a large straight tree, which is still a practical means of transport for residents to move around the swamp, known as the Okavango Delta), while our driver stood at the back of it with a long pole, which he was going to use for pushing the boat forward.

Balancing into this primitive boat was difficult and the scorching sun wasn’t helping at all.

But at least we had learnt our lesson after the previous day’s close encounter with thorns. No bermuda shorts and naked legs today.
So, we avoided the sunburns, since we were gliding for about an hour in the canals, through water lilies and reeds, watching horses and buffaloes along the river banks and birds flying over speed boats loaded with tourists.

Although last time we had flown with a small airplane over the Okavango Delta and were under the impression that we had lived the magic of the area, five minutes in that traditional boat were enough for us to realize that the mokoro experience is really unique and incomparable.

Our afternoon was again amazing.
We enjoyed cold beers along with fresh peanuts, while sitting by the river and watching one of those magnificent sunsets with its glorious explosion of colors that can be seen only in an African sky…
