Transport (rental car ...or other)

Rental car

We had booked for a 4x4 car with South African Hertz  in Johannesburg, through, Rentalcars website and had been reassured (after a phone call and an e-mail too) that we would be allowed to cross-border travel to all the countries that we were interested in (Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique and Botswana).
Unfortunately, when we arrived, they told us that we would be able to drive only in the 3 of the 5 countries: Botswana, Zimbabwe.
That meant forgetting about Zambia and Malawi.

The Hertz policy does not allow cross border driving in these two countries.

Transport

The roads in South Africa are excellent.

The roads in Zimbabwe are in a very bad condition, most of them full of potholes.

In Zambia we didn’t drive a rental car. We used taxis instead.

The roads in Botswana are in a good condition.

Proper clothing

Prefer light clothes that can be worn in layers and comfortable flat shoes.

You will definitely need windproof and waterproof jackets…

If you travel with a rental car, things are much easier, since you have your luggage with you all along.

Foreign exchange

In South Africa you may exchange your money at the airport, at exchange kiosks and at any ATM. Credit cards are used everywhere.

Equivalence USA Dollar - South African Rand (ZAR)

1 USD = 12.9581 ZAR

You may check prices here.

In Zimbabwe you can’t exchange money easily in the banks or at ATM because simply they are sort of cash there. Credit cards are also very rarely used (in hotels, resorts and some petrol stations). By April 2009, the Zimbabwean dollar was suspended indefinitely.
The government has adopted a multiple currency framework which includes the Australian Dollar, Botswana Pula, British Sterling Pound, Chinese Yuan, Euro, Japanese Yen, Indian Rupee, South African Rand, and United States Dollar.
This framework creates, naturally, an absolute confusion for local and foreign tourists too.
American dollars, though, are used everywhere and it is the most preferred currency in the country.
The current equivalence USA Dollar - Zimbabwean Dollar (ZWD) is:
1.00$ =1.00 ZWD,
when the formal equivalence_as given by the XE Currency Converter_is:
1.00$ = 361.900 ZWD

You may check prices here.

In Zambia (Livingstone) US dollars are accepted everywhere. Same is applicable for credit cards too.

Equivalence: USA Dollar - Zambian Kwacha (ZMW)

1 USD = 9.27744 ZMW
You may check prices  here.

In Botswana US dollars are accepted everywhere. Same is applicable for credit cards too.

Equivalence: USA Dollar - Botswana Pula (BWP)
1 USD = 10.2432 BWP
