Magic Trekking to the Kipoureon Monastery

We woke up very early in the morning, in an adventurous mood, since we would go trekking on an amazing route.
We would begin from Kaminarata Village and would end up to the Kipoureon Monastery, with its fascinating history and its breathtaking views to the Ionian Sea!

Kostas would drive us with his car to a wide overlook near Kaminarata, and more precisely to the position Aetostasi, where from we would meet hikers of the Hiking Club of Palliki and a few German tourists, who also wanted to become acquainted with a path/jewel of the area.
From Aetostasi would begin the climbing down to the Kipoureon Monastery.

Luckily, we had worn good athletic shoes, since the initial paved path turned rough and steep after a while, scattered with big stones.

Breathtaking views, exquisite colors and intoxicating aromas…

Nothing had prepared us for the astonishing beauty of the landscape and the intoxicating aromas of the thyme, the wild bushes and the wild mulberries.

A magic place, where the green of the mountain meets the deep blue of the sea and where the steep, naked limestone rocks seem to lose something of their wildness as they dip inside the bosom of the Ionian Sea.

Naturally, we were not expecting the rain shower which wetted as to the bone, but with the general mood of joy and euphoria that we were in, we didn’t pay too much attention.
On the other hand, how could we complain, when the damp ground and the wet plants were filling the air with incredible, unique aromas?

Moreover, the exquisite views of the bays and the cape of Shiza far below were taking our breath away and we couldn’t stop taking photos…

Ancient, mystical land…

Our first stop was the ruined, now, Tafiu Monastery with the icon of Saint Paraskevi, (altitude 210mt), to the west part of the Mountain Tafios.
An ancient land, loaded with memory and nostalgia, since the first inhabitants of it were the mentioned by Homer Tilevoes or Tafioi. Here one can also see the very ancient and also considered miraculous “Homer’s Spring”.

But the nature in this place has gone really wild, as if it wants to fight and cover the history that the people had once left here…
At this sacred place, Mycenaean graves had been found enriched with forgotten offerings (carved scales, coins and ceramic pots).
But when the Monastery was devastated in the 18nth century, there was no concern or care for its preservation or restoration and whatever is left today of it is just abandoned, ancient ruins...

Regardless of that, though, the place has something mystical and strange, as if its ancient secrets are hidden beneath the wild vegetation.

We kept trekking on the rough path, admiring, always, the eternal blue of the Ionian Sea and also the countless shades of green of the mountain vegetation, till we reached the outstanding Kipoureon Monastery.

The monastery was founded by the monk Hrysanthos Petropoulos-Boikos from Paxoi Island, Russian citizen, in 1759 in a land which was offered by the old Monastery of Saint Paraskevi Tafiu.
Its name derives from the numerous gardens which the monks maintained in order to make a living.

We took videos and photos from a nearby kiosk and we had the chance to have better views of the amazing cape of Shiza, distant, lonely and inaccessible within its glorious, wild beauty.
