Megas Lakos

17nth of June
The beach bar “Fishbones” and our acquaintance with unique Marios

Megas Lakos Beach (10 km away from Lixouri) is situated near the village Soularioi.
It is a beautiful long beach with clayey rocks and red sand, which offers an organized part with umbrellas and sun beds, but due to its length one may, also, search and find tranquility there, if he simply wants to admire the landscape or to swim.

Due to its shallow waters it is ideal for families and it is separated only by a thin slice of clayey rock from the nearby, also well known beach of X, which one may reach on foot. In the far distance there is the small uninhabited island of Vardianoi.

We chose to stop at the lovely beach bar “Fishbones” and enjoy an ouzo with “meze”.

From the very first moment one senses that the bar is a very distinguished and aesthetically wonderful place.
At its entrance poised on two wooden piles there is a big wooden, colorful fish, while a little further there are the elegant tables and the chairs of the bar, under the shadowy wattle.
The area which leads to the beach is fenced with nautical rope and there is a small ladder which leads to the umbrellas and the sun beds beneath.
There is also a pretty lawn besides the central bar, if one wants to enjoy there an afternoon drink.

Ouzo, “meze”, nice company and positive thinking…

Our first impression of Marios, the owner, was wonderful from the very first moment we met. With his alternative style, his colorful summer trousers and his bright smile, he reminded us of a bohemian artist.

After having ordered our ouzo, which came accompanied with a fantastic variety of fresh seafood and vegetables, Marios came to our company and a flawless and pleasant discussion began.
His father, Mr. Benetatos, had immigrated to Athens, after the big earthquakes of Kefalonia, in 1953, and Marios himself had seen for first time his village near Lixouri in 1984, just after his father’s death.
But several years after that first visit, due to the great financial crisis which hit Greece, along with the rest of the world, he abandoned his job in the bank which he was working then and he reinvented himself, like an authentic son of Kefalonia.
He decided to stay permanently in his birth land and he opened the beautiful beach bar “Fishbones”.
As he told us, that was the best decision he had ever taken in his life and we agreed, since his new job suits him perfectly!

Marios brought us even more delicious “meze”, like fried zucchini and eggplants, local fried cheese and also a generous Greek Salad.

We must add that we liked very much the choise of music in Marios’ bar and we sat thee till the early afternoon, taking photos of the beach bar and the beach too, enjoying the serene views and also the company of our host.

But, at some point came the time for us to leave, since we wanted to photograph the amazing sunset in Petani Beach.
We said good bye to Marios and returned to the amazing beach which had bewitched us from the first moment we had seen it.
