The mysterious Kounopetra

Our next stop was the famous Kounopetra (the moving rock), which is situated at the area Akrotiri.
It is a very particular geological phenomenon of Kefalonia, since for many years the huge rock that stands out of the sea was having a strange continuous movement, which was pushing it sometimes towards the sea and sometimes towards the shore.

For more than a hundred years the big rock is a major pole of attraction for thousands of tourists who visit Kefalonia.

The locals still remember the visitors to put small sticks in the water between the rock and the shore and to watch with astonishment the relocation and even the breaking of the wooden sticks, any time that Kounopetra was vibrating from the sea to the shore and the opposite.

Naturally, this geological paradox attracted the interest of many scientists of the geological sector, who were visiting the island for many years in order to understand it and explain it.
Accordingly to the research, the “secret” of the endless movement is to be found in the random position of the rocky formations, at the basement of the big rock, at the bottom of the sea, and in some meteorological phenomena that appear from time to time in the area.

The movement of Kounopetra started lessening in 1953, after the catastrophic earthquake which hit the island and after 1974 stopped completely.

Today the visitors of this strange geological phenomenon can watch the movement of a smaller rock, which is situated next to the old mysterious Kounopetra and the locals call “New Kounopetra”.

In any case, the movement of this new rock is rare and not continuous, as the movement of the old Kounopetra was.

We walked on this huge rock, explored it and, of course, took many photos and videos of it.

We also had the chance to admire an amazing sunset, which we also captured with the lenses of our cameras, while at the same time we took several videos of it too.
