The raw diamond of Kefalonia

In general (Smile & Say Hello, Keep in touch, Don’t be afraid, Eat local food, Take many photos)

Money

In Kefalonia, like in the rest of Greece, Euro is used. You may exchange very easily foreign currency in cash machines (ATM) and in some hotels. Prefer the ATM. Debit and credit cards are widely used. You will have no problem at all, but it will be wise, if using the credit card, to notify your bank when you will be travelling to Greece, so that they won't block any suspicious-looking transactions.

Transports

We travelled by car ( our own) from Athens to the port of Patras and from then on we embarked (with our vehicle) the ferry-boat “Nisos Kefalonia”, which with we travelled till the port of Sami in Kefalonia. Then we carried our journey by car again till we reached our final destination (Logos-Lepeda, Peninsula of Paliki, Kefalonia).

If you prefer travelling by plane, the flight from Athens lasts just 45 minutes, whereas in the summer months the island is connected to major airports overseas. Kefalonia airport is located 8 km away from Argostoli and shuttle buses run from there to the capital. Taxis or rental cars are also available.

If you are travelling from overseas, airlines such as Thomas Cook, Thomson, easyjet and Ryanair have chartered flights from London, Manchester, Birmingham, Newcastle and Cardiff to Kefalonia during the summer. There are also flights from Austria, the USA, Canada and Australia.

For those of you who prefer travelling by ship, apart from Patras, there are departures from the ports of Killini, Astakos, Ithaca, Zakynthos (Schinari) and Lefkada.

If you are already in Argostoli there is ferry boat to Lixouri (every 20 minutes). You can take your vehicle with you for your journey to Paliki.

The roads in Paliki are in a pretty good condition, although the signage is not very good. But in any case, the distances are short, the route amazing and it is worthy riding around the peninsula (with your own vehicle or with a rental car), since the areas around Lixouri are of exquisite beauty.

Sights

The peninsula of Paliki in Kefalonia is in itself an eternal sightseeing. Stroll around beautiful Lixouri and take photos of the statue of the satiric poet Andreas Laskaratos at the promenade of the town. Do not miss to photograph the exceptional Iakovatios Library, the Petritseio High School (with history that goes back to 2 centuries) and enjoy a lovely almond pie at the historic Mavroeidis patisserie (100 years of functioning in 2018). Visit the cell/room of Lixouri’s Saint, Panagis Typaldos-Papa Basias and also the church of St. Charalambos, protector saint of Lixouri.  The villages of Anogi in Paliki are also having great history and ancient civilization.  Discover the old and beautiful churhes there, visit the oil press/museum in the village of Kaminarata and also the Mycenaean graves in the village of Monopolata. Go for trekking to the historic Kipoureon Monastery and enjoy the splendid beaches: Petani, Lepeda, Porto Atheras, Platia Ammos, Megas Lakkos and also the famous resort of Xi. A visit to the mysterious Kounopetra is also an absolute must and maybe the nicest thing that you can experience in Paliki is the boating to the spotless beaches Amidi and Fteri.

Food

In Paliki you will enjoy excellent fresh fish and seafood and also delicious local meat and cheese in idyllic taverns and in gourmet restaurants too. Do not miss the experience of tasting the famous Kefallonian meat pie and take with you as souvenirs for your friends, family and yourselves some of the most famous traditional products of the area such as: pasteli, mandolato, mandoles, excellent olives and also the flagship of the Kefallonian wines, the famous Robola.

Μentality

The inhabitants of Paliki, as authentic Kefallonians, are the epitome of what we call “sui generis”.  Extremely hospitable and polite, sharp minded, bold, multitask, adventurous, with great endurance and amazing courage_ since biblical earthquakes and financial disasters too have been hitting their area constantly during their long and moving history_ with love and justified pride for their land and its rich civilization, with continuous thirst for learning and also amazing sense of humor, the people of Paliki are probably the most adorable people in the whole world.  Their uniqueness, and this is really remarkable, is to be seen in the fact that they have managed to thrive in almost every sector, including art and science, not only in their land, but also in every single corner of the planet that their destiny had happened to send them. They have left behind them a great legacy, through their astonishing achievements, for the next generations. If it happens to visit Paliki you will be definitely fascinated by them!
