Kefalonia: Rough guides

Necessary documents

Passports

For EU citizens who travel to Greece, no passport is required, just the identity card with latin characters is enough. For the non EU citizens, a valid passport is necessary to enter Greece.

In case you lose your passport in Greece, the local police and the embassy of your home country must be contacted. It is recommended to have a photocopy of your passport in order to get the process of replacement quicker.

Visas

All citizens of foreign countries, except for the countries of the European Union, the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, need a visa to enter Greece. For more information, contact the Greek National Tourist Offices in your country or go to your embassy in Greece.

Animals' documents

Animals (pets) require a valid health certificate to enter Greece.

Vaccines and medicines, health cards

Greece has developed advanced health care system. It would be wise, though, to get informed before travelling, about vaccines and medicines, necessary for your journey. If you receive particular medicines for chronic disease ask your doctor to prescribe them for you in advance.

If you have private insurance, make sure that you have taken with you the number of your contract, along with the phone number of your insurance agent.

Air tickets – comfortable seats

There are flights to Kefalonia with Aegean

We travelled by car ( our own) from Athens to the port of Patras and from then on we embarked (with our vehicle) the ferry-boat “Nisos Kefalonia”, which with we travelled till the port of Sami in Kefalonia. Then we carried our journey by car again till we reached our final destination (Logos-Lepeda, Peninsula of Paliki, Kefalonia).

If you prefer travelling by plane, the flight from Athens lasts just 45 minutes, whereas in the summer months the island is connected to major airports overseas. Kefalonia airport is located 8 km away from Argostoli and shuttle buses run from there to the capital. Taxis or rented cars are also available.

If you are travelling from overseas, airlines such as Thomas Cook, Thomson, easyjet and Ryanair have chartered flights from London, Manchester, Birmingham, Newcastle and Cardiff to Kefalonia during the summer. There are also flights from Austria, the USA, Canada and Australia.

For those of you who prefer travelling by ship, apart from Patras, there are departures from the ports of Killini, Astakos, Ithaca, Zakynthos (Schinari) and Lefkada.

Where to stay (hotels)

For our staying in the Penisnsula of Paliki – Kefalonia we chose the construction complex of summer houses “Alekos Beach Houses”

Only one and a half km to the south of Lixouri and within a beautiful orchard (2.300 mt) there are the five exquisite summer houses of the construction complex mentioned above, only a few meters away from the beach. They are built with very specific style in absolute harmony with the amazing Kefallonian nature, while at the same time they are extremely functional. We stayed in the flagship of the complex,

the Villa Alexandros

(amazing villa with circumferential veranda (200smt) and with fantastic views to the sea. Moreover, right in front of it there is a specially formed grass area and also a wonderfully formed area for barbeque. The villa has three bedrooms, each with its own decoration, reception area and fully equipped kitchen, large living room and two luxurious bathrooms. There is also a large internal fireplace)

and also in

the Villa Eleanna

(the villa has three pretty bedrooms, one of which Queen Size, with style and character, internal dinning room with round, large table, beautiful veranda/balcony, fully equipped kitchen, spacious bathroom and wc.The house is surrounded by a beautiful orchard, its atmosphere is very cozy and all the rooms are functional and extremely comfortable).

Transport (rental car ...or other)

The roads are in a quite good condition, although the signage is rather complex and not very assisting. But, in any case, the distances are short, the route amazing and it is worth driving around Lixouri (either with your own vehicle or with a rental car), since most of the locations in Palliki are of unique beauty.

Climate- weather (luggage)

The climate in Kefalonia is a typical Mediterranean climate. The major characteristics are hot summers and mild, relatively short winters. There is plenty of sunshine throughout the year.

Proper clothing

Prefer light clothes that can be worn in layers and prefer flat shoes. Keep in mind, though, that summers in Greece can get too hot, so cotton silk or linen clothes and also sandals are necessary too. You will feel fresh and more comfortable. Swimming suits, sunglasses and also good athletic shoes for trekking are also absolutely necessary.

Foreign exchange

In Kefalonia you may exchange your money at the airport, at hotels and at any ATM. Prefer the last one. Credit and debit cards are used everywhere.

Greece’s currency is the EURO

You may check the equivalence of EURO with other currency here

Contacting your Embassy

You must always have with you detailed information, as far as contacting the Embassy of your own country.

Travel insurance

We always have travel insurance before each journey, with  Mondial Assistance, which offers support and assistance to travellers all over the world.
