Agia Thekli

14nth of June
Picturesque, idyllic villages of Palliki

When we left Porto Athera, we took the road which was leading to the tiny village of Agia Thekli.

The village was first inhabited during the Byzantine Years and the first family that settled here was the Loverdos family, which is believed to have brought with them the icon of Agia Thekli, while at the same period they built in the village the homonymous church for safely putting the holy icon inside it.

The church we see today was constructed in 1887, since the oldest one was destroyed by the earthquakes that hit Kefalonia in 1860.

The village is built upon a green hillside and at its entrance there is a spring which is called “Keria”.
It is made of stones, decorated with carvings and it is still in a very good condition, since here were coming the villagers, till recently, to collect fresh water for their houses and their work.

We photographed it, since we found it very interesting and we also took some snapshots of the half built church of Agios Nikolaos.
At the yard of this church one may see the Monument devoted to the dead heroes of the Resistance (Second World War).

In the village, every year on the 24rth of September, takes place a little folk festival (panygiri) when Agia Thekli is celebrated. The villagers enjoy dancing and traditional music all night long, till dawn.

We left the village of Agia Thekli behind us and while we were returning to Lepeda, we passed by the village Rifi, a picturesque settlement with only 40 inhabitants.
Rifi is the birth land of the painter Panagis Gavrielatos.
Kostas, the owner of our guesthouse, had informed us that there we would find an idyllic place, where we could taste great grilled local meat and also the best meat pie of Kefalonia.

We found the place indeed. It was called “ATSUPI” and it looked lovely even from outside. Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to stop there at that moment, but we would visit it in the next coming days.
We drove a little further up, towards the village Damulianata, built into lush vegetation.
It has been characterized as traditional settlement, since it is one of the very few villages which the earthquake of 1953 didn’t destroy completely.
The remained houses, all built with stone, “see” amazing sunsets, since the orientation of the village is to the west.
In Damulianata there is the church of Our Lady with its wood carved icon temple, constructed by the famous Spiros Antypas, father of the pioneer of the Rural Movement in Greece, the also very well known Marinos Antypas.

We admired the whole green landscape, wrapped into an afternoon veil of fogginess, since it had rained a while ago.

We also became…acquainted with a herd of goats which stopped our car for a while.
In any case, we found the…incident very funny and didn’t mind to wait for the…naughty ladies to pass first!
