Yoshino

It was the first time that we were beginning to recognize directions at the road labels and we saw the name Yoshino written on one of them along with the Unesco sign. So lucky!!! The  GPS didn’t want it, but good luck had smiled to us.

Yoshino, along with Omine and Kumano Sanzan in Koyasan are the three holly places into the deep forests of the Kii Mountains. They are connected with pilgrimages to the ancient capitols of Nara and Kioto and they reflect the union of Shinto (deeply rooted tradition of the adoration of nature in Japan) and Buddhism which was introduced to Japan by China and the Corean peninsula.

The holy areas (495,3 hectares) and the surrounding landscapes of their forests reflect an insisting and well rooted tradition of the Sacred Mountains for more than 1200 years. The area with its great number of streams, rivers and waterfalls is still part of the living cultivation of Japan with up to 15 million visitors per year.

Each one of the three areas includes many temples. Some of them were established since the 9th century. We would visit Koyasan another day.

We arrived at Yoshino, monument of Universal Heritage. After Yoshino we went to Osaka.
