International airport of Narita…

On the edge!

We arrive at the airport at 6.30 in the evening, after a long journey that lasted almost two days. They stop us at the control to check “my own” suitcase, since for some strange reason it stirred up their curiosity. I demand that they should put gloves on. An employee responsible for the task puts antiseptic on his hands, digs into my suitcase and starts fumbling. We were asked if we had guns_ as if we were going to say “yes” if that happened to be the case_ and then the guy tries to find out whether the suitcase had a possible second bottom. Result: A messed up suitcase which I try to put back in order. I’m really on the edge!

We exit and start searching for the car. We reach at the counter, but the employee responsible for it has vanished. Twenty minutes later, he appears frantic and apologizes.

But apology was not the only thing we were… “offered”!

Who are you trying to fool Christos?

The employee, a tall, skinny Japanese with a modern hair style asks for the international driving license. Christos_ a real gentleman_ gives it to him. His license is valid from 2014 to 2019. The man has a look at it and objects, informing us that the international license is valid for only one year strictly and what Christos showed him was…something else. Christos carried on being crafty, trying to persuade him that it all had to do with a new service. The employee, obviously not believing that, searched all the relevant regulations of the country and repeated once more that the international formal license was still valid for one year strictly, end of discussion! I turn to Christos and give him a glare, because I realize immediately what exactly has happened. Christos looking really upset_ ready to take his first Oscar_ claims that since he had the normal driving license, there is no need to have the international one.

«Why bother for the international license, when we already have the “good” one???? The formal one???»

Meanwhile, the stubborn employee still refuses to give us the car, because our driving license is not valid. I ask for somebody who could speak proper English ( as if I was speaking it perfectly). They send me to another counter. After having tried all possible means (shouting, begging and so on), I realize that we are at a dead end. Time has come for my ultimate “weapon”.

«WHERE is THE POLICE?» I ask with real audacity
«What do you need the police for?»
«I just want to discuss my misery with them one more time!»

Christos collapsed in a chair and was holding his breath, while I was threatening him that I will take the first available flight returning home. The… JAPANESE LADY behind me starts loosing her temper, so I realize that show time is over and I give up.

Rail pass…to pass!

We arrive at the hotel Narita Excel Hotel Tokyu at the Narita airport and I ask immediately for trains and time tables, while a sheepish Christos is waiting for me in the room. Unfortunately the prices are outrageous, so I search instead for the Japanese rail pass. I have three choices: A 7 days rail pass, a 14 days rail pass and a 21 days rail pass. The 7 days pass (with cost 425e per two persons) covers all the trips that we are interested in. On the contrary, the one way ticket to Kioto only (with cost 200e per two persons) was far too expensive. The bad news was that one should do the booking online before visiting Japan and not while in Japan. I was wondering whether they would be able to check when we had arrived in Japan.
