Hannover

Hannover 6th of May
Hannover Zoo…one of the best in the world!!!

The day dawned really brilliant! Almost a summer day, indeed, with blue sky and perfect sun! We could never ask for a better weather in Hannover for our scheduled visit to the wonderful Erlebnis Zoo, the second best in Europe and one of the best in the world, as far as respect to the animals living there and as far as the formation of an excellent environment, which resembles with the highest standards their environment of origin, in order to live under the best possible conditions.

After a good, filling breakfast we took our bicycles once more and headed to the Zoo.

We left them at the entrance, paid 26 euro each for our fascinating tour (and believe us, the experience is unique and deserves every single penny, so do not hesitate to visit the place) and with our tickets in our hands, we entered the huge area (22 hectares) which contains more than 3.500 animals. The animals are cared for by 500 employees approximately, while the zoo receives 1.600.000 visitors per year. It was established in 1865, possesses a world record of five Asian baby elephants born in one calendar year and has received the 2009/2010 “Best Zoo in the World” award. The Erlebnis Zoo participates also in various conservation efforts through multiple programs.

It would be impossible to see all the fascinating “inhabitants” of this amazing park in one day only, since the Zoo is separated in many unities. We chose the most interesting ones, in our opinion, and managed this way to get an idea about the excellent conditions under which animals of different places of the planet live there.

We initially chose the thematic park of Zambezi, which recreates the African savannah. An artificial river runs alongside giraffes, rhinos, zebras and chamois. We walked on one of the two banks and photographed the animals on the other side.

Thematic Park “Zambezi”

Then we traveled with a small tow boat down the river and took photos of African huts, in a truly beautiful course, which lasted 10 minutes approximately,

before continuing on foot again in the Savannah, where we admired the elegant flamingos, the huge hippo, who was half sunk into the water, and also the proud and strong lions, behind a special and absolutely safe glass window.

So near and so far at the same time…But we never saw any railing or any cage…The animals walk around free and undisturbed and come calmly near the glass to observe the visitors, something that we lived ourselves and found it fascinating.

Thematic Park «Jungle Palace"

The next thematic unit we visited was the Jungle Palace: The scenery there was completely different and the place resembled an abandoned Indian Palace. In its lake, we watched magnificent and serene elephants to enjoy their bath and we laughed a lot with an adorable, still clumsy but absolutely amazing baby elephant, which had thrilled all the little kids around.

Thematic Park “Yukon”

The last unit we visited was the one of Yukon. In this area, an almost cinematographic scenery is set, representing Yukon as it was during the years of the “Gold Fever”, with the wooden constructions, the banks and the theatres which the gold diggers used to spend their free time to. Absolutely fantastic!

In the Yukon Unity we watched charming little penguins to eat from the hand of one of the zoo’s employees and laughed with the sweet beavers that were nibbling a wooden lug, satisfied and completely oblivious by our presence. We also descended an underpass, where we admired behind the glass the huge and magnificent polar bear that was staring at us within reach!

No way for us to walk any further! As we have mentioned before, it is rather impossible for a visitor to see all the animals of the zoo within only a few hours. This is the reason why the lucky Hannoverians visit their beautiful park as often as they please, so as to become acquainted with the many “inhabitants” who live there.

We left behind us the Erlebnis Zoo and took the way back to the hotel. Before reaching there we passed by the lovely beer garden at the Listerturm, at the entrance of the forest and ate sausages and French fries. We accompanied them with very nice local cold beers. Then we returned to the hotel and slept for a while, after a rather tiring but wonderful day. Later on we freshened up and went out to enjoy our last dinner in Hannover.

Excellent and refined cuisine with Greek references...

We had chosen the excellent restaurant  Ambrosia54th, accordingly to tripadvisor, among the 1065 restaurants of Hannover. Its cuisine is exceptionally refined with Greek references, but with a very modern and sophisticated Mediterranean twist. We highly recommend it to vegetarians, vegans and fans of the good Mediterranean Cuisine and also to those who prefer the seafood and the tidbits instead of meat. We tried grilled vegetables, baby calamari, prawns, the best tarama ever, delicious roast potato with shower cream, vegetable soup and fresh fish. All perfect! We completed our exquisite dinner with ice cream and left with the best of the impressions for the place and its owners, who are Greeks.

That’s how our last night in beautiful Hannover ended and then we returned to our hotel, relatively early, since next day we should have to get up early and go to the airport.
