Hannover

Hannover 5th of May
Cycling around!!!

When we woke up next morning, early enough so as to have the whole day ahead for our activities, we realized that the weather was still excellent. Of course, we knew before coming to Hannover, that in the days we had chosen to travel the temperatures would be quiet high for Germany, but still we were not expecting that we would be able to move around the city with light clothes and to have only a simple jacket only for the afternoon and the evening, when it was getting a bit fresher and a little cloudy. The whole green, spring like Hannover was unveiling to us its beauty in all its magnificence and we wanted to enjoy every singly minute.

So we took our bicycles, our hotel as we have already mentioned had this service too, and after enjoying some royal German waffles and Cappuccino coffee to the very pretty café Finesse which we had spotted the previous day.

We took the route which would lead us to the Lake Maschsee, one of the most beautiful places for visiting in Hannover and also historic landmark of the city.

Lake Maschsee, one of the major landmarks of Hannover!!!

We left our bicycles to a safe place and started our walk in this fantastic location.
The artificial lake (78 hectares), which is situated very near the New Town Hall, was constructed in 1934, only a few years after the crash of 1929 and in the middle of the global financial depression. Its construction was solving two major problems of that distant season. The huge unemployment and the problem of the floods near the lowlands of River Leine. The lake looses daily one cm through evaporation and water seepage, but the Hannoverians had foreseen the problem and therefore in order to maintain a constant level, a pump station at a series of ponds in Ricklingen (south bank) provides the Maschsee with a water supply.

Today, Lake Maschsee is a wonderful place for walking at its waterfront and during weekends is filled with crowds, when the weather allows it. Many minor festivities are organized there regularly and are characterized with musical and gastronomical events. The most famous and popular of them all is the great festival that takes place in August. It is one of the most celebrated ones in the whole Germany, since many concerts and other artistic events take place. Also, quite famous is the well known around the whole world Octoberfest, which on the contrary with its name takes place in September.

We walked at the waterfront, we saw the “lockers of the wishes” at the railing_ where many visitors that come to Hannover make a wish and “lock” it there_ and since the weather was allowing it we sat outside and tried many different beers, which we accompanied with delicious sausages. We also visited several benches where peddlers were selling very tasty crepes, caramelized apples and other sweets, like strudel and also coffee of all kinds.

We fed the ducks and watched many rowing boats and little ferries on the lake, while the spring sun was caressing playfully the calm waters.  The Germans love sports and apart from rowing, they often cycle around the lake or one can see them jogging too. The lake is decorated with many sculptures and other pieces of art and we saw one of them and photographed it. It was the bronze Olympic torchbearer that stands atop an 18.5 metre-high stone column.

After having enjoyed all the pleasures that beautiful Maschsee has to offer, we took our bicycles again and headed towards

The famous Botanical Garden!!!

our next destination, which was the famous and really impressive Botanical Garden of Hannover, the Berggarten.

The Botanical Garden is part of the Royal Gardens, the Herrenhausen, which are among the most exquisite and famous baroque gardens in Europe. The time we had at our disposal was not enough for us to visit Herrenhausen, but the beautiful Berggarten compensated us by all means, since it is an excellent, serene and with plenty of natural beauty place, very popular for locals and visitors of Hannover too.

We saw and photographed the historic Library Pavilion predominant at the entrance of the garden with the grass lawns, the flower beds and the central green house. The benches around it are also very pretty and are offered for moments of serenity and harmonization with the beautiful nature.

We couldn’t stop photographing the exquisite red, crimson, white, pink, orange and blue flowers, the nice lawns, the green plants with the big, wide leaves, the aloe plants and the numerous cacti pots, which gave us a first idea of what we would have the pleasure to see next, when we would enter the main garden.

We walked on the beautifully arranged roads of the garden, while listening to the warble of the birds and we saw centenarian trees with huge roots leaning towards lovely little lakes with water lilies. We saw gentlemen sitting on benches, reading calmly their newspapers and watched parents with happy carefree children.

We visited the Tropival House and were impressed with the size of their leaves.

Since the Botanical Garden of Hannover is famous in the whole Europe for its huge variety and collection of orchids, we didn’t miss a visit to the Orchid House and were happy to photograph these exquisite flowers, which we could spot to all the roads of the garden too.

We had stops to the Leibniz Temple and also to the Mausoleum of the Royal Family of Hannover, also situated in the beautiful Berggarten. We took some photos of the last monument and were photographed too sat on its steps.

When we completed our walk to this beautiful and perfectly preserved garden, we went to the café which is situated there and enjoyed our cappuccino coffee within a magic atmosphere, filled with the serenity offered generously by the Berggarten.

The Germans have very developed ecological awareness and adore the visits to their Botanical Garden, for a moment of rest during their busy week. They respect it all heartedly and since they are very proud of it, they consider it a sanctuary of relaxation and encounter with the nature. We felt similar emotions and we left the place with the best of the impressions. The hectic city paces make us all forget how precious is our harmonic coexistence with nature, but we had the joy to remember it again inside this green paradise…

After our visits to the beautiful Lake Maschsee and to the fascinating Berggarten,  we returned to our hotel by bicycle, where we had some rest and some time to freshen up, since we were planning to dine in one of the nicest restaurants of Hannover, the  Prager Hofsituated in one of its most classy and elegant streets, the Gellertstraße. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and with plenty of character too.

Dinning in style

The Cuisine is Czech, but with strong German influences. We knew that there we would taste probably the best beef fillet in Hannover and that was exactly what we ordered. The meat was excellent, grilled exactly as we had asked it. It came to our table with a rich salad and delicious potato and vegetable croquettes. We accompanied our food with excellent wine Pinot Grigio, light and white, since the rules about red wine suiting red meat are no longer applicable so strictly for people who enjoy a good meal. Moreover, the particular wine goes perfectly with almost everything, since it has very refined and fresh taste. We completed our gourmet dinner with crepes and ice cream and then returned to our hotel to rest.

The next day would be our last one in the beautiful city of Hannover and we were going to visit the amazing Zoo of the city, the second best in the whole Europe. Good sleep was necessary, since once more we were planning to use the bicycles and our feet too, so as to be able to see it all!
