Necessary documents

Passports

For all citizens of the European Union, who want to travel to Germany, a passport is not necessarily required and one may travel only with an id card in Latin characters. For citizens of some countries, though, special documents may be required apart from passport and therefore they should get proper information from the German Embassy in their country before traveling.

Vaccines and medicines, health cards

Germany has a very sufficient and developed Health System. But it is always wise to get some further information, before traveling, if is necessary to have some vaccines or to take some medicines with you and this is applicable to all countries you travel to. If you are already taking medicines for some chronic disease you may ask your doctor to prescribe them in advance before travelling.

If you have private insurance, make sure that you have taken with you the number of your contract along with the phone number of your insurance agent.

Air tickets – comfortable seats

We travelled to Hannover-Germany with Swiss Air, via Zurich in Switzerland. Our return journey to Athens was done again with Swiss Air from Hannover, via Zurich again, before reaching Athens Airport.

Where to stay (hotels)

We chose for our staying in Hannover the Hotel Grunewald

Excellent boutique hotel, in one of Hannover’s most beautiful neighborhoods and very near the tram station where the passing by tram leads to the centre of the city. The beautiful Eilenriede park/forest is also situated very near to it. Very good breakfast, nice and functional room with views to the garden, veranda, private parking, internal swimming pool, sauna and access to bicycles for the hotel’s customers.

Transport (rental car ...or other)

Hannover’s airport (Flughafen Hannover-Langenhagen) is situated 11 km northern of the city and for your transport to the city of Hannover you may use the rail network (S-Bahn). In the city you can use for your transports the U-bahn, which is something like tram, or the buses and bicycles, or simply walk on foot around all the sightseeing which is to be found within short distances. Public transports are very well organized and usually there are no delays to buses either.

Of course there is also the option of the rental car for those who prefer to move around the city of Hannover or simply don’t like the public transports.

We used taxi from and to the airport, but the excellent weather allowed us to walk on the roads of Hannover and to use bicycles for certain sightseeing we wanted to visit.

Climate- weather (luggage)

Best Season
The best season for visiting Hannover is usually the period between the months May and August. Moreover, from June to August some of the most beautiful festivals take place in the city and two of the most interesting are the: Lake Maschsee Festival and the Schützenfest Hannover

Proper clothing

Prefer light clothes that can be worn in layers and comfortable flat shoes. If you visit Hannover in the period between spring and summer you will probably need only a good jacket and light waterproof and windproof jackets too.  But, keep in mind that if you visit the place during winter, the climate is characteristic of Northern Europe, with very low temperatures, so you will definitely need a warm coat, a hat or a cap, scurf and gloves.

Foreign exchange

For all the Euro zone citizens things are quite simple, since the single currency is the euro (€). So you can simply use your debit card for the ATM and your credit card for any use. Citizens of other countries, that don’t belong in the Euro zone may find the relevant information as far as currency converting to the following link

Contacting your Embassy

You must always have with you detailed information, as far as contacting the Embassy of your own country, in case of emergency.

Travel insurance

We always have travel insurance before each journey with  Mondial Assistance which offers support and assistance to travelers all over the world
