Vrontados-Monastery of Mersinidi-Pantoukios

3/12/2017
Images like paintings!!!

We woke up early, next morning, and after having breakfast in the beautiful dining room of Villa Rossa, we started our travelogue. Our route would include the areas: Vrontados, Pantoukios, Lagada, Marmaro and Kardamyla, where from we would return back to Chios town.

On our way out of the town, while driving north, we passed by Tampakika, an old industrial area, where predominant are four restored windmills. Along with several others, which were built nearby, the four mills were servicing the needs of the local tanneries (tampakika), in the late 19th and early 20th century.

Apart from being a significant landmark of Chios town, the windmills at Tampakika is also a monument of great historical and aesthetic importance for the local society.

We decided to visit the nearby famous settlement of Vrontados, on our way back to Chios town and after having completed our travelogue for that day. We photographed the windmills, a nearby jetty, the beautiful palm trees on the pedestrian road by the sea and also the mural graffiti, which impressed us with their great aesthetic.

Afterwards we continued our route to the north-eastern part of the island towards Pantoukios.

On our way to Pantoukios, we visited the Monastery of Mersinidi, with its panoramic views to the Aegean Sea. Founder of the monastery was the monk Christoforos Seremelis (1897).

The monastery, which is built on the edge of a cliff and seems to rest upon the waves, is devoted to Our Lady Myrtidiotissa. Her miraculous icon was discovered by the monk in the sea, beneath the monastery. At Mersinidi are kept, too, the holy vestments of Patriarch Gregory V of Constantinople, Great Martyr of the Greek Orthodox Church.

The monastery has offered precious charitable services, during the German Occupation (World War II) and also assistance to the Resistance, at that time.

When we arrived at Pantoukios, an idyllic seaside village, we went for a ride to its beautiful beach and we saw St. Nikolas church too.
