Hidden Secrets

In general (Smile & Say Hello, Keep in touch, Don’t be afraid, Eat local food, Take many photos)

Money

In Chios, like in the rest of Greece, Euro is used. You may exchange very easily foreign currency in cash machines (ATM), in currency exchange offices and in some hotels. Debit and credit cards are widely used. You will have no problem at all, but it will be wise, if using the credit card, to notify your bank when you will be travelling to Greece, so that they won't block any suspicious-looking transactions.

Transports

You can very easily travel to Chios Island either by ferry (between Piraeus and Chios, there are daily ships all year. The distance between Piraeus and Chios is about 8 hours. To Oinousses island there are boats every day) or by plane.

We flew from Athens to Chios with Olympic Airways. If you want to explore the island you will have no difficulty. There are buses, taxis and rental cars. We found more convenient the rental car solution, since it would give us more freedom to plan our road trip the way we wished. The roads are good enough, but you will have to drive carefully, since they are not very wide.

Sights

Chios is an endless sightseeing itself. Walk on the central road of Chios town, where you will see signs of many empires that have left their mark there. Worth visiting are: the Byzantine Museum, the Fortress of Chios, the Archaeological Museum of Chios and the significant Korais Library. Visits to the famous medieval Mastic Villages (Mastichohoria), which will impress you with their village/castle architecture, to the Byzantine Monastery of Nea Moni (Monument of Universal Heritage of UNESCO) and to Chios Mastic Museum are absolute “must”. Mavra Volia Beach is worth visiting too, since it is one of the most beautiful and alluring beaches in Greece. Make a pilgrimage to the Monastery of Agia Markella, protector saint of the island and go to Vrontados, famous for its rocket war, “rouketopolemos”, (Easter custom which dates back to 1830). If you have time, don’t forget to visit the medieval villages of Avgonyma and Anavatos too.

Buy beautiful hand painted ceramics from the village of Armolia and of course, last but not least, buy original mastic products (cosmetics, liqueurs and sweets) from the island! You will not find them anywhere else in the world! Chios is the island of mastic, after all, and its unique product entered the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2014.

Food

You will find excellent and very fresh seafood and fish in Chios. But you definitely must try the famous “Mastelo” cheese, the dried olives “kurmada” and the very tasty wild mushrooms of the island, served in good restaurants and traditional taverns. Try also mastic cappuccino coffee, mastic liqueurs and refreshments, the local strong drink called “suma” and the delicious local sweets, the so called “masurakia”.

Μentality

The people of Chios are extremely kind, friendly and hospitable. They are easy going and ready to offer their assistance to travellers. They are proud of their beautiful island and their love for it shows in the well preserved numerous old churches and other monuments that can be found in Chios. Most of them were or still are seafarers and many globally known ship-owners originate from Chios Island and the nearby Oinousses. There are many ex patriots too, all over the world, always carrying the memory of their island with love and nostalgia. Their generous donations often help financially their homeland and add to its prosperity.
