Travelling guide, maps

You may see the map of mytravelingdays, which we followed when we were in Chios, here

Necessary documents

Passports

For EU citizens who travel to Greece, no passport is required, just the identity card with latin characters is enough. For the non EU citizens, a valid passport is necessary to enter Greece.

In case you lose your passport in Greece, the local police and the embassy of your home country must be contacted. It is recommended to have a photocopy of your passport in order to get the process of replacement quicker.

Visas

All citizens of foreign countries, except for the countries of the European Union, the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, need a visa to enter Greece. For more information, contact the Greek National Tourist Offices in your country or go to your embassy in Greece.

Animals' documents

Animals (pets) require a valid health certificate to enter Greece.

Vaccines and medicines, health cards

Greece has developed advanced health care system. It would be wise, though, to get informed before travelling, about vaccines and medicines, necessary for your journey. If you receive particular medicines for chronic disease ask your doctor to prescribe them for you in advance.

If you have private insurance, make sure that you have taken with you the number of your contract, along with the phone number of your insurance agent.

Air tickets – comfortable seats

We traveled from Athens to Chios Island with Olympic Airways

We traveled from Chios to Oinousses by ferry and returned by sea taxi
Oinousses is located 9 nautical miles away from the Town of Chios and can be reached within an hour by ferry, which operates daily routes. The ferry accepts vehicles too, although the distances in the island are small and pleasant. Another way to reach the island is by sea taxis, which operate daily, departing from Lagada. If you choose the sea taxi to get to Oinousses you will reach there within approximately 20 minutes.

Where to stay (hotels)

Villa Rossa Chios Town (Kampos)

Beautiful early 20th century mansion converted into a great hotel. Only 4 km away from Chios town and 2km away from Chios Island National Airport. Very friendly and helpful staff. Lovely room with all the amenities, nice breakfast, good wifi

Medieval Castle Suites Chios, Mesta

Amazing Hotel complex that combines all modern facilities with the experience of living in a 14th Century village. Luxurious and very well furnished suites. Excellent toiletries with mastic, TV, telephone, fax, pc, very good wifi. Very comfortable beds. Well cared to the smallest detail.

Chios Chandris Chios Town

Impersonal hotel with efficient and polite staff though. Rather disappointing. It was a far cry from the famous Greek hospitality which we had experienced in the hotels Villa Rossa in Kampos and Medieval Castle Suites in Mesta.

The only positive thing was probably the amazing views to Chios Town and to the port, although the balconies were too small. The bathroom had signs of abandonment and it was obvious that efforts for its renovation were nonexistent.

Transport (rental car ...or other)

We rent an automatic Hyundai i10 with Hertz in Chios Island National Airport. Although there are buses and taxis, if you wish to go around the island (highly recommended) the best solution is a rental car. The roads are generally in a pretty good condition but sometimes too narrow and windy, especially on the way to Nea Moni and to the medieval villages Avgonyma and Anavatos.

Petrol prices

Climate- weather (luggage)

The climate in Chios Island is a typical Mediterranean climate. The major characteristics are hot, dry summers and mild, relatively short winters. There is plenty of sunshine throughout the year. You will enjoy your journey there all year long. We travelled to Chios in December and enjoyed perfect sunny days!

Proper clothing

Prefer light clothes that can be worn in layers and prefer flat shoes. Keep in mind, though, that summers in Greece can get too hot, so cotton silk or linen clothes and also sandals are necessary too. You will feel fresh and more comfortable.

Foreign exchange

In Chios Island you may exchange your money at the airport, at some hotels and at any ATM. Prefer the last one. Credit and debit cards are used everywhere.

Greece’s currency is the EURO

You may check the equivalence of EURO with other currency  here

Contacting your Embassy

You must always have with you detailed information, as far as contacting the Embassy of your own country.

Travel insurance

We always have travel insurance before each journey, with  Mondial Assistance, which offers support and assistance to travelers all over the world.
