Lithi - Vessa - Agios Georgios Sykousis

4/12/2017
Astonished owls…from here to eternity!!!

Our travelogue was completed with our visits to the village Lithi (one of the 22 mastic villages (Mastihohoria) of Chios, the only site in the world where the mastic tree, or skinos in Greek, or Pistacia lentiscus var. Chia, is cultivated) and also to the medieval traditional villages Vessa and Agios Georgios Sykousis.

In the village of Vessa, while searching for a place to eat for lunch, we found a little traditional coffee shop. Mrs. Lemonia, the owner, offered to share with us the meal which she had prepared for her family. So we tasted spaghetti with wild mushrooms in a delicious tomato sauce, the famous cheese of Chios, Mastelo, and salad. Mrs. Lemonia gave us also some tangerines for the road.

In our efforts to exit the traditional village, we managed to…jam our car_ the definition of adventurous ignorance_ on one of the very narrow vaulted alleys! After lots of laughs and many difficult maneuvers, too, there came the successful and…heroic exit and we finally left the village, which was a real labyrinth for us. It is a pity, though, that we couldn’t take any photos of this funny incident, but we were literally trapped in the car! Good job, we managed to…escape, after all!!!

Either wise, we would probably still be in Vessa, looking at each other like owls for a whole eternity!!!....

Endless funny events...

But, as it was proved afterwards, the comic events were rather…endless! When we reached our next destination, the village of Agios Georgios Sykousis, we asked one of the inhabitants which road we should follow to go to the central square. Well informed, as we thought, this time, we started driving overconfident, absolutely certain that we would reach there, without any unexpected events. But, once more, the road was extremely narrow and there were no helpful road signs, of course.

Just before reaching the damn square, we found another car which was blocking our way. It was stopped right in the middle of the narrow road and a man with his mother’s help was unloading bags from the super market. After having looked at us as if we had just landed from Mars, he started waving his hands in desperation, telling us to move backwards! Backwards, yes, but where exactly??? On this damn, narrow road?? And what if would jam the car again?? No need to say that the man had enough of us, a few minutes afterwards… He had to get in his truck and drive himself in a small and narrow deadlock, in order to let the ignorant and stubborn drivers to pass!! Poor soul…We had definitely managed to destroy his good mood for that day…

But, as if that was not enough already, we still had no idea how to reach the central square. So, we took another inhabitant of the village in our car, hoping that this time we would be luckier and would manage to reach our destination. Unfortunately, that person felt comfortable enough to start asking questions about where we were coming from and where exactly we were heading to. Meanwhile, he never stopped informing us about all his relatives, dead and alive ones, trying to make some sort of friendly conversation!! We almost missed the road again and luckily enough, we didn’t jam the car, for second time, within a few hours! And all that, because he was too busy talking to have his mind on the route!!!

We couldn’t stop laughing, when we eventually exited the village and started driving on the central road again!

Where were we, really? In Chios Island or in the…Twilight Zone???!!!!
