Monastery of Agia Markella

7/12/2017
The Patron Saint of Chios Island

Eight km away from the main village of Volissos, in Northwestern Chios, built almost on the beach, is the Monastery of Agia Markella, protector and patron saint of Chios Island.

The large beach, facing the nearby Psara, consists of sand and tiny pebbles and it is known for its cold waters and its deep seabed.

At the far end of the beach, there is path which leads to the point where Agia Markela was klilled and became martyr and saint of the Greek Orthodox Church (1500AD). The water is always warm there and is considered healing and miraculous by the locals. On the 22nd, where the saint’s Name Day is celebrated by the Orthodox Christians, thousands of pilgrims from Chios, the nearby islands and many other places in Greece arrive at the monastery. Lots of them cover the whole distance from Chios town (50 Km) to the monastery on foot, since they have made a promise to Agia Markella after having received help from her. The locals talk often about stories concerning her many miracles. Agia Markella was born in the nearby Volissos.

After having visited the peaceful and idyllic monastery and having taken plenty of photos, we took the road back to Chios town, with a short stop at Volissos for lunch, since it was noon by then.

Απέραντο γαλάζιο !!!

While approaching Chios town, the landscape was exceptional. We could see very green and luscious vegetation in combination with extremely rocky grounds. The views of Chios town from above were amazing…The stunning endless blue of the Aegean Sea is mesmerizing and truly eye-catching...

And of course, we couldn’t get enough of it and kept photographing it all…
