Limenas - Beaches

7/12/2017
Eternal beauty!!!

Next day dawned bright and sunny. It didn’t feel like December at all and thet filled us with joy, since our road trip to the Northwest part of the island would be great. The route was including so many beautiful beaches and so much green…It would be really shame not to have the chance to enjoy it.

After our breakfast, we took advantage of the good weather for some more photos in Mesta. Afterwards we left and started driving towards the Northwestern beaches and the Monastery of Agia Markella.

We had a first stop at Limenas ( 4 km distance away from Mesta) which is the biggest port in Chios Island.

The right part of the bay is used by big ferry boats and other smaller boats, but the left part is suitable for swimming and the waters are clean.

The port has four jetties. Two of them are used by ferry boats and cargo ships, one by cruise ships and one by the army.

We took photos, left behind us the area of Mesta and started climbing the road to the Northwest part of Chios.

The route was amazing. On the left we could see the exquisite Aegean Sea and on the right pine tree forests which were giving their place to steep rocky grounds from time to time. The beaches we had the chance to observe from above were competing in beauty and we couldn’t stop taking photos and videos of them.

Countless smaller and bigger bays, surrounded by soft green slopes which were reaching, almost, the sea were appearing in front of our amazed eyes, offering the views of their blue-emerald waters.

The beach which impressed us firstly was the Agia Irini Beach.

It is a secluded, beautiful bay with sand and small white pebbles, surrounded by a fantastic landscape which combines the blue of the sea with the rich vegetation of the area.  It is named after the nearby chapel of Agia Irini and every 5th of May, when her name is celebrated by Orthodox Christianity, there are taking places local celebrations in the village. Right opposite the beach, one can see a small island and built on it is the homonymous chapel of St. Stefanos. Every year, on the 2nd of August many pilgrims, inhabitants from the village Elata, go there with boats and spend the night there. There is a small festivity that takes place on that actual day in the small island.

The Lithi Beach is also a very picturesque natural potrt of the homonymous Lithi village.

Lithi is an amphitheatre village built in a pine forest and faces the eternal blue of the Aegean Sea.  The port combines a fishermen’s shelter and a large amazing beach with thin sand and clear shallow waters.

Exceptional, among the countless beautiful bays of the Nortwestern part of the island is the magic bay of Elinda Beach. It is secluded and peaceful natural shelter which was “hiding” in its dreamy waters the legendary Greek submarine “Papanikolis” during the years of the World War II. The landscape around the beach is of rare natural beauty, with mountains and pine tree forests, which reach the sea.

Metohi Beach is located two km away from the nearby village of Sidirunta. It is a friendly and easily accessible beach, since it is very near the central road, with thin sand and tiny pebbles.

Tigani Beach is an isolated, large beach, ideal for swimming and snorkeling too, due to the nearby reef islands. It is another green and beautiful beach with magical landscapes surrounding it.

Trahili Beach is an isolated and peaceful beach, with crystal clear blue waters and pole of attraction for all those who are searching for tranquility and serenity.

Two km away from the village of Volissos is situated one of the most popular beaches of Chios, the so called Lefkathia Beach. It is an idyllic secluded bay which appears through the small hills of the area. Its perfect semicircular shape catches immediately the eye! Accordingly to the locals, the beach took its name either by the wild white lilies which grow there, or by the ancient temple of the Greek Goddess Lefkothea, which was once built there.
