Karyes

4/12/2017
Magnificent views!!!

We started our journey early in the morning, since we wanted to visit the central part of the island, which is of great historical and architectural interest. Our first stop was at Karyes, a beautiful amphitheatre village, with amazing views to the far horizons. The village is also visible from the port in Chios town.

Karyes is a place famous for two things: its excellent water, which comes from its various springs, and its numerous churches.

There are many plane trees at its central square and around it the visitor can see: the Community Office, the central fountain of the village, called “Mana” (Mother), the playground for kids, the War Memorial of 1940 and the church of St. Nikolas the Martyr.

There are nine small churches in Karyes and four monasteries. The inhabitants have extremely developed the religious feeling and until our days many expatriates abroad offer financial sponsorships for the preservation and maintenance of the old churches that are considered as cultural heritage of this place.

The most important church is the one called: “Koimisi tis Theotoku”, devoted to Our Lady. We photographed it along with the chapel of “Agia Markella”.

We left Karyes behind us and started climbing the winding road with the spiral curves, which would lead us to the Monastery of Nea Moni. The road surface was very slippery, due to some recent landslides and the curves quite dangerous. We were driving carefully and had several stops to take some photos of the magnificent mountain scenery.

We made a small detour, to visit the very nice Monastery of St. Marcos and the Cave of St. Parthenios.

The last one is accessible by a path, next to the Monastery of St. Markos. An iron gate leads to it and there is also a key given to the visitors who want to open the gate and follow the steep path.
