Kardamyla

Traditional architecture

We left Marmaro and took the way to the Upper Village, to Kardamyla, one of the oldest and largest villages in Chios, which is built in the same place where old Kardamyli was located (word which means barley bread in Ancient Greek).

The village is characterized by its traditional architecture, its narrow paved alleys and its houses made of stone. We were impressed by the beautiful central square with the tall plane trees and the old mansions and we took many photos and videos, before taking the road back to Chios town.

Learning about the famous rocket war in Vrontados…

Before arriving there, we passed by Vrontados, of course. This small coastal settlement is globally known for its rather dangerous Easter custom of “Rocket Wars”, which dates back to the years of Ottoman Era. Accordingly to this tradition, on Holy Saturday Night, thousands of homemade bottle rockets are launched between two churches of the village (Agios Markos and Panagia Ereithiani).

Truth be told, we were lost into the labyrinth created by the narrow roads of Vrontados, but luckily enough we met a kind elderly lady, named Maria, on the way to her home. She didn’t hesitate to get in our car and lead us to the famous churches we wanted to see and photograph.  She was sweet, innocent and very helpful.

When we returned her home she said her good byes with blessings and wishes for a nice staying in the island and we were once more impressed by the kindness, the hospitality and the good intentions of the inhabitants of Chios!
